BIO

Enigmatic masked DJ/producer Marshmello makes groove-oriented, synth- and bass-heavy electronic dance music that found mainstream crossover success in the late 2010s. In the spirit of similarly cloaked dance figures like Deadmau5 and Daft Punk, Marshmello performs wearing a full-head-covering, in his case a marshmallow mask. Despite his early anonymity, Marshmello's career blew up in 2015 when he began releasing tracks online. From there came shows at New York's Pier 94, Pomona, California's HARD Day of the Dead festival, and Miami Music Week. He also scored a number five Billboard electronic/dance album with his full-length debut, Joytime. Collaborative hits followed, with artists including Selena Gomez ("Wolves"), Khalid ("Silence"), and Bastille (the platinum hit "Happier"). He hit a personal chart peak in 2019 with his revolutionary in-game concert Fortnite Extended Set. Marshmello's career began in 2015 when he posted songs on SoundCloud, including remixes of Zedd's "Beautiful Now," Jack Ü's "Where Are U Now," and others. Soon, he was drawing fans and gaining vocal support from peers like Skrillex, who reposted Marshmello's track "Find Me." High-profile live DJ appearances followed, with shows at Ultra Music Festival and California's HARD Day of the Dead festival, among others. In 2016, Marshmello released a compilation of his previously released tracks, Joytime, which reached number five on the Billboard electronic/dance albums chart and number one on a digital top electronic albums chart. Included on the album was the single "Keep It Mello" featuring rapper Omar LinX. Also in 2016, after a set at Electric Daisy Carnival, Dutch DJ Tiësto jokingly emerged from under Marshmello's mask, fallaciously proclaiming he was the mysterious DJ. The real Marshmello continued to perform and release singles throughout the year, later starting his own Joytime Collective record label. More collaborations followed in 2017, including "Silence" with Khalid and "Wolves" featuring Selena Gomez. Both tracks became Top 30 hits and were certified platinum around the world. In 2018, Marshmello added another hit collaboration to his roster, pairing with British vocalist Anne-Marie for their multi-platinum hit single "Friends." After delivering his second full-length album, Joytime II, he dropped the non-album single "Happier," which featured Bastille's Dan Smith on vocals. The song quickly became a high-charting track, rising into the Top Three in the U.S., U.K., and Australasia. As the popularity of "Happier" continued to rise, Marshmello scored a charting effort with the revolutionary Fortnite Extended Set, a 30-minute mix taken from his 2019 in-game concert that attracted millions of video gamers. By the time summer rolled around, "Happier" had topped the Billboard electronic chart and peaked at number two on the Hot 100. Meanwhile, a collaboration with Chvrches, "Here with Me," began its steady rise up the charts, giving the indie outfit their highest-charting single to date. Marshmello also added additional cross-genre collaborations to his singles list, including "Light It Up" with Tyga and Chris Brown, "One Thing Right" with country singer Kane Brown, and "Rescue Me" with pop-punkers A Day to Remember. The latter track appeared on Joytime III, which arrived in July 2019 and featured guests Slushii, Flux Pavilion, Elohim, and Wiwek. In February 2020, Marshmello joined with Svdden Death for the track "Crusade." ~ Matt Collar

BIO

A superstar DJ, sought-after producer, taste-making label owner, and wizard behind Major Lazer, Diplo (aka Diplodocus, Wes Diplo, and Wes Gully) launched his career on the fringes of dance music. With his mash-up mixtapes, he found and created a sound where his musical tastes -- '80s pop, electronica, Dirty South hip-hop, and his major influence, Miami bass music -- intersect. His attention-grabbing projects Hollertronix, with partner DJ Low Budget, and the Piracy Funds Terrorism, Vol. 1 mixtape, with British-Sri Lankan MC M.I.A., made a heavy impact on the alternative electro-pop scene, amassing rave reviews from music critics and indie kids alike. Later, his Mad Decent imprint presented the edge of pop, hip-hop, and dance music while his conceptual Major Lazer project mixed dancehall with rave culture and toured the globe as a live-party sound system. By the late 2010s, super duos with Skrillex (Jack Ü) and Mark Ronson (Silk City) both yielded Grammy wins for collaborations with Justin Bieber and Dua Lipa, respectively. Diplo was born Thomas Wesley Pentz in Tupelo, Mississippi. Although he lived in a few different cities in the South, he mainly grew up in South Florida. He spent his youth in his father's bait shop and fixated on manatees, alligators, and dinosaurs with hopes of becoming a paleontologist. However, he wound up pursuing an education in film studies, starting at a couple Florida colleges but finishing up his undergraduate degree in Philadelphia at Temple University in 2003. Before his move to Philadelphia, Pentz had moved temporarily to Japan to escape daily life in America. He sent a demo tape of his beat concoctions to Will Ashon, founder of U.K. independent hip-hop label Big Dada Records, and once signed to the label, he relocated to Philadelphia. To support himself during and after graduating from Temple, Pentz took on a few different jobs in Philadelphia: social worker, after-school mentor, movie theater employee, and gig-by-gig DJ. He was barely able to pay the rent, and the frustration was stunting his musical development (although he does credit one of his musical epiphanies to the after-school students who exposed him to crunk and Baltimore club music). Thus, Diplo and like-minded DJ Low Budget pooled their resources to start up their own club nights in Philadelphia, which they branded Hollertronix. It simply began as a fun night of genre-warping dance music, but blossomed into an underground subculture, drawing out crowds from all over the East Coast. Under the Hollertronix moniker, Diplo and Budget released the highly praised Never Scared mixtape; it was listed as one of the New York Times' top albums of 2003. The following year, Big Dada released Diplo's solo debut album, Florida, a more downtempo piece focusing on melody and instrumentals that was a departure from the melee of mashed-up vocals and beats. His unrelenting work ethic produced a considerable number of acclaimed mix CDs and 12" records; however, none of them accumulated more interest and Internet chatter than the 2004 Piracy Funds Terrorism, Vol. 1 mixtape that introduced M.I.A. outside of his U.K. borders. Developing a yearning to produce more worldly music, he also began to throw his energy behind the Brazilian youth- and street-based music known as funk carioca (also referred to as baile funk), a derivation of Miami bass music. So, it was no surprise that when he established his own label, Mad Decent Records, around 2005; his first signee was the funk carioca group Bondo do Role. In 2009, the label signed a distribution deal with Fontana and Downtown Records. Their first collaborative release was by Major Lazer, a fictional Jamaican bounty hunter that was the brainchild of Diplo and DJ Switch. Major Lazer's debut album, Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do, appeared in 2009, the same year as the Diplo remix collection Decent Work for Decent Pay: Selected Works, Vol. 1. In 2010, Mad Decent began their Blow Your Head compilation series with the unmixed collection Blow Your Head: Diplo Presents Dubstep. Mix CDs (the reggae-filled 2011 release Riddimentary), EPs (2012's Express Yourself and 2013's Revolution), a Major Lazer album (2013's Free the Universe), and production work for others (including Alex Care's "Too Close" and Usher's "Climax") took Diplo to 2014 and that year's aptly titled compilation Random White Dude Be Everywhere. Filled with recent tracks, the set found the producer favoring the trap music style, the style heard on Baauer's hit single "Harlem Shake," which itself was a Mad Decent release. In 2015, he co-produced multiple tracks on Madonna's release Rebel Heart, and worked with Skrillex on the album Skrillex and Diplo Present Jack Ü. Both Jack Ü and its hit collaboration with Justin Bieber, "Where Are Ü Now," picked up Grammys. Major Lazer's LP Peace Is the Mission also landed that year, topping the U.S. dance chart and peaking at number 12 on the Billboard 200. In 2017, Diplo recruited Travis Scott, Camila Cabello, Quavo, J Balvin, Sean Paul, Busy Signal, and more for Major Lazer's Know No Better EP. That same year, Diplo issued a handful of singles under his own name, including "Imperfections" and "Swerve" with Starrah, and "Get It Right" featuring MØ. The latter track found its way onto 2018's California EP, which featured additional guests Lil Yachty, Desiigner, Santigold, Lil Xan, and Trippie Redd. That same year, Diplo teamed with fellow producer Mark Ronson to form the duo Silk City. Their hit collaboration with Dua Lipa, "Electricity," helped him score his third Grammy in 2019 for Best Dance Recording. In April 2019, his collaborative effort Labrinth, Sia & Diplo Present LSD arrived, followed in May by his Higher Ground EP featuring guests Tove Lo and Kah-Lo. Also that year, Diplo issued several country-flavored singles under the moniker Thomas Wesley, including "So Long" with Cam, "Heartless" with Morgan Wallen, and "Lonely" with the Jonas Brothers, followed by "Do Si Do" featuring Blanco Brown in April 2020. All of those tracks would appear on his country-inflected album Chapter 1: Snake Oil, which was released in May and debuted at number 50 on the Billboard 200. ~ Cyril Cordor, Rovi

Los Angeles indie electro unit Capital Cities got their start writing commercial jingles before shifting their bright and catchy songwriting talents into the world of pop. Synth-forward, horn-backed hits "Safe and Sound" and "Kangaroo Court" became viral favorites, landing their 2013 debut, In a Tidal Wave of Mystery, on the Billboard 200. Founding composer/songwriters Ryan Merchant and @Sebu Simonian first came together in 2011 via Craigslist, working as commercial jingle writers. Shortly after meeting, they released an EP online, which included the song "Safe and Sound," an upbeat mash of programming and melody that went viral and gained the act a lot of Internet exposure. The live band includes bassist Manny Quintero, trumpeters Spencer Ludwig and Will Artope, guitarists Nick Merwin and Vahagni, and drummers Channing Holmes and Aaron Prather. They played major international festivals such as Coachella (twice), Bonnaroo (twice) and Lollapalooza (4 times). Their full-length debut, In a Tidal Wave of Mystery, arrived on Capitol in June 2013. The band's innovative video for "Safe and Sound" earned them a Grammy nomination. They further expanded their audience in 2014, hopping onto Katy Perry's Prism tour as show openers. Capital Cities returned in the summer of 2017 with their fourth EP, Swimming Pool Summer, which featured rapper Rick Ross on "Girl Friday." A year later, they issued their sophomore full-length Solarize.

New Jersey-based producer Clams Casino's instantly recognizable sound, fusing sludgy, blown-out beats with hazy, nearly shoegaze-like distortion and haunting, dislocated samples, almost singlehandedly spawned the cloud rap subgenre. Around the turn of the 2010s, his atmospheric production work for rappers like A$AP Rocky, Main Attrakionz, and especially Lil B stood out and garnered much critical praise, and his 2011 mixtape Instrumentals became a landmark release, gaining a cult following and expanding his audience beyond underground rap circles. His sound remained influential throughout the decade, as he produced or remixed songs by artists such as FKA twigs, Lana Del Rey, and Blood Orange. He continued releasing solo instrumental work, additionally making his major-label debut with the 2016 full-length 32 Levels, which included guest appearances by Vince Staples, Kelela, Samuel T. Herring (Future Islands), and others. Born Michael Volpe, Clams Casino landed his first collaboration after contacting Lil B (then a member of Bay Area rap group the Pack) via MySpace near the end of the 2000s. The MC proceeded to use several Clams Casino productions, all of which were trippy, wistful, and strangely emotive, for the likes of "Realist Alive," "Motivation," and "I'm God." The last one of those three was also used by Soulja Boy for "2 Milli." Volpe's profile gradually rose as word got out that he was the one behind these tracks, as well as material by Main Attrakionz, Main Attrakionz's Squadda Bambino, and Mobb Deep's Havoc. In March 2011, he uploaded a free 13-track mixtape of instrumentals -- something of a highlight reel, along with a previously unused beat. This preceded the first official Clams Casino solo release, the Rainforest EP, which was issued by Tri Angle that June. A limited vinyl pressing of Instrumentals soon followed on experimental label Type. Additional instrumental mixtapes were issued in 2012 and 2013, a period during which tracks by the likes of A$AP Rocky, Mac Miller, and Blood Orange were released with his production work. Among Volpe's more notable collaborations to surface in 2014 and 2015 were ScHoolboy Q's "Gravy," FKA twigs' "Hours," and three cuts from Vince Staples' Summertime '06. Signed to Columbia, Clams Casino made his major-label debut as an artist in 2016 with 32 Levels. A fourth instrumental mixtape appeared in 2017. "4 Gold Chains," a collaboration with Lil Peep, was posthumously released in 2018, and Clams Casino additionally contributed to albums by Joji and serpentwithfeet the same year. Moon Trip Radio, a completely instrumental solo full-length, was issued in 2019. Instrumental Relics, a compilation of some of Volpe's best early productions (including "I'm God," with its Imogen Heap sample fully cleared), arrived in 2020. ~ Andy Kellman & Paul Simpson, Rovi

BIO

New York City singer/songwriter and producer Moby was one of the most important electronic dance music figures of the '90s, whose crossover success helped bring the sound into the mainstream and established him as a progenitor to the crop of superstar DJs that would define the next wave of popular electronic music. At the peak of his breakthrough visibility, he courted controversy for putting a public face to the notoriously anonymous electronic genre and attracting scorn from techno purists. Early on, Moby fused rapid disco beats with heavy distorted guitars, punk rhythms, and detailed productions that drew equally from pop, dance, and movie soundtracks. Not only did his music differ from both the cool surface textures of ambient music and the hedonistic world of house music, but so did his lifestyle; Moby was famous for his devout Christian beliefs, as well as his environmental and vegan activism. First breaking into the British Top Ten with the 1991 single "Go," he soon established himself in the U.S. as one of the scene's premier producers with 1995's critically-acclaimed Everything Is Wrong. After a brief foray into punk rock introduced fans to his other sonic inspirations, he transitioned into a new role as a crossover pop star with 1999's seminal blockbuster, Play. While his chart success would not reach the same heights, he maintained his fanbase with steady, reliable output, swapping between traditional house tracks and expansive ambient collections into the 2020s. Occasionally, he even dipped back into guitar-based, politicized anthems with side band, the Void Pacific Choir. Born Richard Melville Hall, Moby received his nickname as a child, derived from the fact that Herman Melville, the author of Moby Dick, is his great-great grand uncle. Moby was raised in Darien, Connecticut, where he played in a hardcore punk band called the Vatican Commandos as a teenager. Later, he briefly sang with Flipper while their singer was serving time in jail. He briefly attended college before he moved to New York City, where he began DJ'ing in dance clubs. During the late '80s and 1990, he released a number of singles and EPs for the independent label Instinct. In 1991, he set the theme from David Lynch's television series Twin Peaks to an insistent house-derived rhythm while remixing his track "Go," the B-side to his debut single "Mobility." The updated "Go" became a surprise British hit single, climbing into the Top Ten. Following its success, Moby was invited to remix a number of mainstream and underground acts, including Michael Jackson, Pet Shop Boys, Brian Eno, Depeche Mode, Erasure, the B-52s, and Orbital. Moby continued performing at dances and raves throughout 1991 and 1992, culminating in a set at 1992's Mixmag awards, where he broke his keyboards at the end of his concert. Moby, his first full-length album, appeared in 1992, although it was released without Moby's involvement and contained tracks that were at least a year old at the time. In 1993, he released the double A-sided single "I Feel It"/"Thousand," which became a moderate U.K. hit. According to The Guinness Book of Records, "Thousand" is the fastest single ever, appropriately clocking in at 1,000 beats a minute. That same year, Moby signed a record contract with Mute in the U.K. and major-label Elektra in the U.S. His first release for both labels was the six-song EP Move. His previous American label, Instinct, continued releasing CD collections of his work against his wishes. These included Ambient, which compiled unissued material recorded between 1988 and 1991, and Early Underground, which collected tracks from several of his singles and EPs under different pseudonyms, including the original version of "Go." The Story So Far, a U.K. version of Moby with a different track listing, also appeared. In 1994, the single "Hymn" -- one of the first fusions of gospel, techno, and ambient music -- was released. The song re-appeared as the lead track to Everything Is Wrong, his first album released under his new record deals. The full-length appeared in the spring of 1995 to uniformly positive reviews, especially in the American press, which had previously ignored him. Despite the promotional push behind the album and his popular sets at the 1995 Lollapalooza festival, the album wasn't a commercial success. "Bring Back My Happiness," however, was a Top Ten hit on Billboard's club chart. The following year, Moby revisited his roots in heavy guitar-based music for 1996's Animal Rights, which featured a cover of Mission of Burma's "That's When I Reach for My Revolver" and received mixed reviews. He also released The End of Everything, an ambient techno album credited to his occasional pseudonym Voodoo Child, on Trophy Records, his own sub-label of Mute. One year later, Elektra collected his soundtrack highlights for I Like to Score, a compilation that included his remix of "The James Bond Theme" for Tomorrow Never Dies, as well as contributions to Cool World, Heat, and Scream. Moby's fifth studio album, Play, appeared in 1999. Surpassing everyone's expectations, the album -- featuring numerous samples of Alan Lomax field recordings -- went double platinum in the U.S. and reached number one in the U.K. Aside from its hit singles, Play's success was assured when its tracks were licensed by dozens of advertisers and compilers. Always a restless producer, Moby followed Play with 18 (2002), a relatively reflective and restrained set dotted with an eclectic list of guest vocalists (including MC Lyte, Angie Stone, and Sinéad O'Connor). It debuted at number four on the U.S. Billboard 200 but didn't come close to catching Play in terms of sales. The downward trend in mainstream appeal continued with Hotel (2005), a mixture of basic contemporary rock and downbeat electronica; early copies were bundled with an ambient disc worthy of separate release. On Last Night, seemingly unaware of contemporary trends in dance music, Moby made a return to club hedonism with some of his most creative -- if unapologetically nostalgic -- material. The austere and morose Wait for Me (2009), featuring a show-stealing appearance from soul singer Leela James, was just the opposite in tone. Destroyed (2011), recorded during late-night sessions in hotel rooms, offered a natural extension of Wait for Me's alienated feel. The companion piece Destroyed Remixed (2012) followed shortly thereafter; a limited double-disc compilation, it featured exclusive remixes by David Lynch, Holy Ghost!, and System Divine, as well as a previously unreleased 30-minute ambient piece by Moby himself. After several appearances in early 2013, including DJ sets at the Coachella Festival, Moby released a single for Record Store Day entitled "The Lonely Night," which featured vocals from Mark Lanegan. The song was included on Innocents, a predominantly downcast album released that October. Other guest vocalists included Damien Jurado, the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne, and Skylar Grey. Three shows were performed in support of the album, all of which took place at Los Angeles' Fonda Theatre. A two-CD/two-DVD documentary, Almost Home, was released in March 2014. Late that year, Moby released an expanded edition of Hotel Ambient, which was originally featured as a bonus disc on the limited-edition version of 2005's Hotel. An additional ambient collection, Long Ambients 1: Calm. Sleep., was later released as a free download. During the latter half of 2015, Moby debuted Moby & the Void Pacific Choir. The first single, "The Light Is Clear in My Eyes," brought back some of the post-punk-inspired crunch from Animal Rights. The following May, he published Porcelain: A Memoir, which focused on his life in the '90s. The book was complemented by a two-disc collection that included Moby highlights from that decade and a selection of tracks by artists who influenced him, including the Jungle Brothers, 808 State, and A Tribe Called Quest. An album from Moby & the Void Pacific Choir, These Systems Are Failing, arrived later in the year. The second Void Pacific Choir effort, More Fast Songs About the Apocalypse, was issued in the summer of 2017. Moby returned the following year with Everything Was Beautiful, And Nothing Hurt. Taking its title from Kurt Vonnegut's book Slaughterhouse-Five, the album also saw him looking back to classic trip-hop for influence. In a charitable move, Moby announced that the proceeds from his 17th full-length, 2020's All Visible Objects, would be donated to a variety of charities with each track benefiting a different organization ranging from animal rights to environmental welfare. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Andy Kellman, Rovi

Producer, songwriter, and DJ Dan Griffith makes wide-eyed, emotional dance-pop under the nom de plume Gryffin. His songs blend organic and electronic instrumentation, incorporating pianos and guitars into melodic house and future bass tracks. First making waves with remixes of songs by pop stars Tove Lo and Maroon 5, he began releasing original material in 2016, and scored over a dozen charting hits with singles featuring guests such as Carly Rae Jepsen, Aloe Blacc, and AlunaGeorge. Many of these hits were included on his 2019 full-length debut, Gravity. A classically trained pianist, Griffith honed his musical abilities playing in bands -- he's also an accomplished guitar player. Upon graduating with an electrical engineering degree from the University of Southern California, he began immersing himself in music production, eventually relocating to Los Angeles. Making his international performing debut in 2015, he released remixes of Tove Lo's "Talking Body," Maroon 5's "Animals," and Years & Years' "Desire" during the same year. In 2016, he released his debut single, "Heading Home," which featured Aussie singer Josef Salvat and landed on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Songs chart. The Bipolar Sunshine-assisted "Whole Heart" appeared later that August, and in 2017 he released "Feel Good," which saw him working with West Coast DJ/producer Illenium and Pittsburgh-based artist Daya. Two more singles, "Love in Ruins" and "Nobody Compares to You," appeared in 2017, continuing his growing run of Billboard Dance chart successes. A collaboration with Quinn XCII and Daniel Wilson called "Winnebago" arrived in 2018, as did the single "Just for a Moment," which featured Norwegian singer Iselin. The latter track landed on his EP, Gravity, Pt. 1, which also featured appearances by Elley Duhe and Stanaj. The single "Remember" (with Zohara) became Gryffin's first to make the Billboard Dance Club chart. In 2019, he continued the series of collaborations with Calle Lehmann and Slander ("All You Need to Know") and Aloe Blacc ("Hurt People"). Additional charting singles such as "OMG" (with Carly Rae Jepsen) and "Baggage" (with Gorgon City and AlunaGeorge) led up to the release of Gravity, Gryffin's debut full-length. Issued by Geffen in late October 2019, the album featured most of his singles to date as well as collaborations with Marina, Seven Lions, Maia Wright, and others. It reached number one on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Albums chart. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

Los Angeles-based electronic trio Cheat Codes debuted in 2015 with their single "Visions," a floor-filling, radio-ready bite of house in a vein similar to Avicii and Swedish House Mafia. Each of the group's three members -- Kevin Ford, Trevor Dahl, Matthew Russell -- has deep roots in L.A., working on individual projects before joining forces for Cheat Codes. Their different backgrounds helped inform Cheat Codes' stylistically varied sound, which can range from warm pop to outright big house bangers. After the release of "Visions," they quickly followed with the tropical-tinged "Don't Say No" (featuring Dresses), "Senses" (featuring Lostboycrow), and "Adventure" (featuring Evan Gartner). As they gained exposure on social media and spins on streaming services, they joined The Chainsmokers on tour. Successive singles continued to drop in 2016, when they unveiled a pair of global hits, "Sex" (featuring Kris Kross Amsterdam) and "Let Me Hold You (Turn Me On)" (with Dante Klein). The following year they released their biggest feature yet, "No Promises" with Demi Lovato on vocals, and embarked on the No Promises world tour (taking them to the U.S., Europe, and Australia). They followed their Demi Lovato hit with "Feels Great," which featured Fetty Wap. ~ Neil Z. Yeung, Rovi

The Blessed Madonna, formerly known as The Black Madonna, is one of the most celebrated DJs of her time, thanks to her eclectic, joyous sets, which can encompass anything from classic electro and new wave to the latest techno and house white labels. Her production work, including the widely praised 2016 single "He Is the Voice I Hear," walks the line between disco and techno, with the emotional weight of the former and the driving momentum of the latter. One of dance music's foremost activists, she is renowned for her commitment to humanitarian work and her outspoken views on LGBTQ rights and gender inclusivity. A string of further releases culminated in her 2016 single "He Is the Voice I Hear," which acted as the first record for her own label, We Still Believe. Mixmag named her DJ of the year (the first time they granted a woman the award), and she appeared on the magazine's cover wearing a gold crown. In 2017, Stamper began a residency at London club XOYO, selling out the venue for 13 straight weeks. She then relocated to the city and became a popular DJ on BBC Radio One. She appeared as herself in the video game Grand Theft Auto Online, where she was given a radio station called We Believe. While she hasn't released any original material since "He Is the Voice I Hear," she has delivered high-profile remixes for Robyn, Silk City & Dua Lipa, Georgia, and others.

Niles Hollowell-Dhar, known by his stage name KSHMR, produces big room electro-house that is heavily influenced by his Indian heritage. The California-based producer first found success as part of the pop-rap duo the Cataracs, who produced hits for Far East Movement, Dev, Snoop Dogg, and New Boyz during the early 2010s. Freeing himself from the expectations of the pop world, he anonymously debuted his EDM alias KSHMR in 2014, publicly confirming his identity the following year. He has released dozens of singles, including collaborations with Tiësto, Hardwell, and R3hab, in addition to EPs such as 2015's Paradesi, 2016's interlude-heavy The Lion Across the Field, and 2017's Materia. Hollowell-Dhar, the son of an Indian father and an American mother, was born in Berkeley, California, in 1988. He attended Berkeley High School, where he met aspiring rapper David Benjamin Singer-Vine. Hollowell-Dhar wrote a diss track against Singer-Vine, but they ended up becoming close friends, and they formed the Cataracs in 2003. Starting with 2006's Technohop, Vol. 1, they released a few digital albums and EPs, as well as the 2007 single "Blueberry Afghani," a collaboration with hyphy group the Pack (featuring a young Lil B). After moving to Los Angeles, they began collaborating with singer Dev. The Cataracs signed to Universal Records in 2010, and they wrote and produced Far East Movement's chart-topping hit "Like a G6," which sampled "Booty Bounce," a song they produced for Dev. The Cataracs' other productions included Snoop Dogg's single "Wet," New Boyz's hit "Backseat," and the entirety of Dev's 2011 full-length The Night the Sun Came Up. The Cataracs' Gordo Taqueria EP was released in 2012, featuring "All You," a collaboration with Wacka Flocka Flame and Kaskade. Singer-Vine decided to leave the Cataracs in 2012, and Hollowell-Dhar continued using the name. He teamed up with Martin Solveig and Kyle on the 2013 single "Hey Now," which charted in several countries. He also produced songs for Selena Gomez, Sean Paul, and Robin Thicke. He decided to end the Cataracs in 2014, and began anonymously producing EDM under the name KSHMR. Debuting in February with the single "Megalodon," KSHMR released a steady stream of tracks that hit the charts of dance music retailer Beatport. Following collaborations with Firebeatz and DallasK, "Karate" (with R3hab) charted in Belgium and France. KSHMR revealed his identity at the Ultra Music Festival in 2015, where he was introduced by Tiësto. The two collaborated on the single "Secrets" (with Vassy), which was the biggest KSHMR single yet. He released the Paradesi EP, which was strongly based on Indian culture, as were additional singles like "Jammu" and "Bazaar." By the end of the year, he had charted at number 23 on DJ Mag's annual Top 100 DJs poll. An EP titled The Lion Across the Field was released in May 2016, and KSHMR performed at the main stage of the Tomorrowland music festival shortly after. His singles during the year included "Invisible Children" (with Tigerlily), "Voices" (with Will Sparks), and "Extreme" (with Bassjackers). He then moved up to number 12 on the annual DJ Mag poll, a position he held the following year. KSHMR's 2017 performance at the Ultra Music Festival, with Timmy Trumpet, was his first to be performed entirely with live musicians. A further Tiësto collaboration, "Harder," appeared that year, and subsequent 2017 singles included "The Serpent" (with Snails) and "Underwater," which featured Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam. He also ventured into psy-trance with the single "Shiva," a collaboration with Marnik and the Golden Army. In 2018, KSHMR teamed up with singer Sidnie Tipton for the acoustic pop-oriented single "House of Cards." "Doonka," a free track featuring Mr.Black, was influenced by trap. This was followed by "Carry Me Home," a progressive house track featuring vocalist Jake Reese. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi

Mako is the creation of Los Angeles-based producer/singer/songwriter/composer Alex Seaver. Originally founded in 2011 as an electronic duo, alongside former member Logan Light, Mako today operates as a one-person act that spans the worlds of alternative pop, indie rock and electronic music, with Seaver leading the way as the sole producer, songwriter, frontman and creative force behind the project. Mako's recent release, “Coyote” gives fans and listeners a first glimpse into Mako’s new creative direction, which Seaver will explore in his forthcoming album, Fable, scheduled for release in Summer 2020 via Ultra Music. As the lead single off the album, “Coyote” represents pure creative freedom for Mako. As Seaver tells it, both “Coyote” and Fable were born out of a phase of artistic stagnation and creative frustration. “Coyote” is thus his reprieve: He abandons all concepts of genre restrictions and fully immerses himself in a state of mind that allows him to create art for the sake of art. As Seaver yet again enters a new phase in the sonic evolution of Mako, he does so with a bright outlook on what lies ahead. —John Ochoa, November 2019

BIO

Grammy-nominated electronic producer Kaskade emerged as one of the most successful American progressive house DJs of the 2000s, pioneering the concept of Las Vegas residencies and selling out arenas across America. With his bright, uplifting dance anthems, he was a steady presence on the U.S. dance charts into the 2010s with Top Ten releases that included chart-toppers Fire & Ice (2011) and Atmosphere (2013). One year later, I Remember (2014) compiled the best of his Ultra years, after which he renewed his contract with the label and released Automatic (2015). During the late 2010s, Raddon began rounding up his singles work into a series of EPs titled Redux. Born Ryan Gary Raddon in Chicago, he spent his early days not only as a DJ, but also as an A&R director and record store owner. In the late '90s, he familiarized himself with the rapidly changing electronic music scene, eventually finding that house music was the subgenre he loved best. He DJ'ed in both New York and Salt Lake City, where he would first produce tracks released on his own tiny label, Mechanized Records. He also sold his music to John Elkins, A&R director for OM Records, who later hired Raddon to assist him at the label. By night, Kaskade spun at local clubs and by day helped kick-start the careers of many artists, including Ming + FS and soul-house act Soulstice. His own full-length recordings under the Kaskade moniker began with 2003's house-inflected It's You, It's Me. A soulful, more organic direction provided focus for the following year's In the Moment, and Raddon kept his name in the record racks by piloting editions in the San Francisco Sessions DJ series (as well as the label mix House of OM). He proved surprisingly dedicated to his production craft, releasing Love Mysterious in 2006, which placed on Billboard's electronic albums chart. That same year, he parted ways with OM and signed with Ultra. Arriving in 2008, Strobelight Seduction -- featuring production by Deadmau5 -- became his biggest commercial success to date, buoyed by the lead single "Move for Me." Released in 2010, Dynasty celebrated his new reputation with a parade of vocal features and a co-production with Tiësto. It also became his first LP to chart on the Billboard 200. That year, Raddon put together Electric Daisy Carnival, a mix showcasing artists on the bill for the inaugural dance music festival of the same name. The double-album Fire & Ice followed in 2011 and debuted in the Billboard Top 20. Featuring a production assist from Skrillex on "Lick It," the effort also included guest vocals from Neon Trees and Skylar Grey. Atmosphere arrived two years later and featured softer, more relaxed music along with vocals from Kaskade himself. After the 2014 compilation I Remember rounded up the best material from his years on Ultra, the DJ renewed his contract with the label and one year later released Automatic. The album featured guest appearances from Estelle, Galantis, John Dahlbäck, and K. Flay, and peaked on the Billboard Electronic chart at number two. In 2016, Kaskade joined Deadmau5 and Skylar Grey on the single "Beneath Me." The following year, he issued the Redux EP 002 (featuring LoKii, Mr. Tape, and Late Night Alumni), as well as the holiday-themed Kaskade Christmas. The DJ then joined Charlotte Lawrence for the 2018 single "Cold as Stone." His third installment of the Redux series arrived in 2019. Redux EP 003 presented a seamless mix featuring Felix Cartal, Gorgon City, and more. ~ L. Katz & John Bush, Rovi

Production duo ODESZA, Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight, began their meteoric journey when they first met and started making music together at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. They released their debut album Summer's Gone in 2012, a critically acclaimed project they completed near the end of their tenure at Western. It was followed by 2014's In Return, which debuted at the top of Billboard's Dance/Electronic chart and featured platinum single "Say My Name." A remix of the track by RAC was later nominated for a Grammy in 2016. ODESZA returned with their much anticipated third full length album A Moment Apart in 2017 which in turn also received two Grammy nominations, for Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Dance Recording for the single “Line Of Sight,” along with debuting at #3 on the Billboard Top 200. For A Moment Apart, Mills and Knight collaborated with Regina Spektor, Leon Bridges and RY X among others. In the course of that eight-year span, they've gone from ground zero to selling out arenas [STAPLES Center (LA), Barclays Center (NYC)], and headlining iconic festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo and Outside Lands. They've built their appeal through word of mouth and streaming, plus a unique live presentation featuring an 11-piece ensemble that includes a horn section and a marching-band drumline.

Until he began branching out in 1996 with a barrage of album productions and remix classics (several of which were heard by more people than the originals), Armand Van Helden was one of the best-kept secrets in house music, recording for such labels as Strictly Rhythm, Henry St., and Logic. Afterwards, he became one of the top names in dance music altogether. As one in the steady progression of top in-house producers for Strictly Rhythm during the early '90s, Van Helden joined such names as Todd Terry, Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez, Masters at Work, and George Morel to record scores of club hits. By the late '90s, a clutch of crucial remixes and several albums made Van Helden's name as one of the most popular producers around. His fame continued well into the 21st century, thanks to successful collaborations with Dizzee Rascal, Steve Aoki, and especially A-Trak, with whom he formed the chart-topping duo Duck Sauce in 2009. Van Helden spent time in Holland, Turkey, and Italy while growing up the son of an Air Force man, and listened to music from an early age. He bought a drum machine at the age of 13 and began DJ'ing two years later, mostly hip-hop and freestyle. Based in Boston while attending college, Van Helden proceeded to moonlight as a DJ; though he settled into a legal-review job after graduation, he quit in 1991 to begin working on production for the remix service X-Mix Productions (founded by his future manager, Neil Petricone). Van Helden also owned a residency at Boston's Loft, and soon made it into one of the most popular nightclubs in the city. After playing one of his production demos for the dance A&R guru Gladys Pizarro in 1992, Van Helden released his proper debut single, Deep Creed's "Stay on My Mind," for Nervous Records. Later that year, Van Helden released "Move It to the Left" by Sultans of Swing, his first single for the premiere American dance label Strictly Rhythm. Though a moderate club hit, the single was eclipsed by another Strictly Rhythm offering, 1994's "Witch Doktor." It became a dancefloor hit around the world and introduced him to a larger club audience. Although he had remixed Deee-Lite, Jimmy Somerville, New Order, Deep Forest, and Faithless, a reworked version of Tori Amos' "Professional Widow" hit the clubs with the same impact as his "Witchdoktor" single. During 1996-1997, Van Helden became the name for forward-thinking pop and dance artists to recruit for remix duty from the Rolling Stones, Janet Jackson, and Puff Daddy to Sneaker Pimps, C.J. Bolland, and Daft Punk. His own-name singles productions continued unabated, with hits like "Cha Cha" and "The Funk Phenomena," plus the release of his first album, Old School Junkies. Following a 1997 Greatest Hits retrospective, Van Helden returned to his old-school rap roots with the party breakbeat album, Sampleslayer...Enter the Meatmarket. The 2 Future 4 U album followed in 1998, spawning a U.K. number one single in "U Don't Know Me" (featuring Duane Harden) as well as the Top 20 follow-up "Flowerz." In mid-2000, Van Helden returned with Killing Puritans, which contained the hit "Koochy," built around a sample of Gary Numan's iconic "Cars." Gandhi Khan followed in 2001, and New York: A Mix Odyssey appeared in 2004, containing hit collaborations with Spalding Rockwell ("Hear My Name") and Tara McDonald ("My My My"). Both of these songs also appeared on Van Helden's 2005 studio album Nympho, and "My My My" became a chart hit once again when it was re-released and remixed in 2006. Van Helden's Ghettoblaster album, influenced by freestyle and other '80s dance sounds, appeared in 2007. Retrospective You Don't Know Me: The Best of Armand Van Helden and New York: A Mix Odyssey, Pt. 2 both appeared in 2008. In 2009, Van Helden collaborated with British rapper Dizzee Rascal for a fidget-house song called "Bonkers." The song hit number one in the U.K., and was a decent-sized hit elsewhere. Later in the year, he teamed up with Canadian DJ A-Trak under the name Duck Sauce, producing a track called "aNYway." It hit the charts in a few countries, but it was a moderate success compared to next year's "Barbra Streisand." Built around an infectious Boney M sample, the song hit number one in several countries, partially thanks to the viral popularity of its music video, which featured cameos by Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, André 3000, and numerous other famous musicians. A few other Duck Sauce singles followed during the next few years, leading up to full-length Quack, which finally arrived in 2014. Van Helden continued to be an in-demand remixer, with stars such as Sam Smith, Madonna, and Disclosure among his clients. In 2015, he released a three-CD mix on Ministry of Sound titled Masterpiece, including one disc of early house tracks, one disc dedicated to yacht rock, and another consisting of '80s freestyle. Van Helden's recording career was given another retrospective in 2016, with Defected Presents House Masters. ~ John Bush & Paul Simpson, Rovi

Slushii is the performance alias of American EDM artist Julian Scanlan, who first made waves in the streamosphere with a series of remixes in 2016. In 2009, prior to adopting the moniker and not yet old enough to get a driver's license, Scanlan joined the psych-rock band Deuteronomy as bass player and songwriter. He appeared on their 2012 album The Propaganda of Deuteronomy. In the meantime, he experimented with digital audio workstations on his own, developing his skills at recording and sound manipulation. At 18, he began posting remixes as Slushii in 2015 and garnered seven-figure plays for his Valentine's Day version of "Want U 2" with original artist Marshmello in February 2016. His remixes of Zara Larsson with MNEK, Alan Walker, and the summer smash "Closer" by the Chainsmokers also attracted listens tallying in the millions. Traversing dubstep and future bass, Slushii's self-released debut EP, Brain Freeze, arrived in the spring of 2016 behind the original single "Emptiness." The dubstep single "Catch Me" arrived in early 2017 followed by the Marshmallo collaboration "Twinbow." In August of that year, Slushii delivered his debut album, Out of Light. Along with a second Marshmallo collaboration, "There x2," his 2018 output included the seven-song Find Your Wings EP and the full-length Dream. 2019 brought "Never Let You Go," featuring Sofia Reyes. ~ Marcy Donelson, Rovi

Mellifluous. That’s how 21-year-old Powell Aguirre likes to think of the music he makes as Surf Mesa. It’s electronic, but full of organic texture. It’s rooted in dance, but sounds best by the light of the full moon. In other words, as Surf puts it, “music for good feels.” That phrase certainly sums up his biggest hit to date, “ily (i love you baby)” featuring Emilee, a tropically tinged bop that was born on TikTok, but quickly conquered listening platforms around the world, amassing over 300 million streams in less than three months, topping U.S. and Global Viral Charts, and debuting on Top 40 radio. When he was in third grade, an older brother hooked him up with FL Studio – and Surf began posting tracks to SoundCloud. When a broken leg left him bedridden in the months after high school, he recorded the EP bedroom. He moved from his hometown of Sammamish, Washington to L.A. as soon as the cast came off. After “ily” exploded, he signed to Astralwerks, where he’s launched a series of new collaborations that include a remix of Marshmello and Halsey’s “Be Kind.” At the end of the day, his goal is to make “just really good pop music. It’s catchy. It’s chill. People hearing it might feel better about their day. It’s...mellifluous.”

For the last decade, Dillon Francis has barely stopped moving. In between making music videos, designing a clothing line, and writing an animated TV show, he has issued countless number of electrifying cuts. His restlessness has made for otherworldly, overwhelming music and compelling art no matter what medium he’s working in. Since rising to prominence in the colorful moombahton scene of the early 2010s, Francis has made head-spinning dance music, rap tracks, and reggaeton. Part of the fun of listening to Francis’ music has become never knowing what you’re going to get. The diversity of his catalog has always been a strength—his genre bending hit “Get Low” with DJ Snake was RIAA-certified platinum and “Coming Over” with Kygo [feat. James Hersey] was RIAA-certified gold plus topped the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. That’s to say nothing of tracks which he has produced and have become underground hits around the world. As his schedule has gotten busier and busier, he’s branched out into other art forms. Recently, he’s been revising scripts on his animated series Gerald’s World, currently developing with 20th Century/Wonderland, and he’s hard at work on his Gerald clothing line with Barney Cools. He’s launched NFT projects with digital artist Chad Knight, among others. Over the last decade, Francis has built his career by adopting whatever idea strikes him on a given day, learning as he goes—making bold, brilliant art by refusing to stand still.

ZHU is ready to move again. After spending a year stuck inside, the Grammy-nominated musician and producer is turning his eyes to the future, when clubs reopen and pure rave energy can overtake a crowd of writhing bodies yet again. Most of his third album, DREAMLAND 2021, was made at home during quarantine, but as he crafted the new set’s grimy techno and sweaty house tracks, he imagined the record as the score to a world starting to spin back into motion—even if, for now, that feels out of reach. Over the years, ZHU has won acclaim for exactly these kinds of forward-looking experiments, including a Best Dance Recording nomination at the 2014 Grammys for his breakout hit “Faded.” His debut album GENERATIONWHY topped Billboard's Dance/Electronic albums chart and landed on the Billboard 200, and he’s had dozens of tracks hit the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. These accolades have earned him partnerships with like-minded brands including Luminosity and Leica. And ZHU continued his productive streak in 2020 with a busy run of singles—including “Only” with Tinashe, “Desire” with Bob Moses, and the Kito and Jeremih collab “Follow”—and a string of live-streams for Digital Mirage, Insomniac, and Lollapalooza. But all of this success has never been the point—ZHU just wanted to head to the dancefloor and dream up better worlds. DREAMLAND 2021 basks in that impulse. He imagines everyone united under one roof raving—a party with enough energy to take over the whole world.

Active since 1987, the year he debuted behind Guru as one-half of Gang Starr, DJ Premier is one of the most crucial figures in hip-hop. No more than three producers (Dr. Dre, RZA, and Prince Paul) can test Premier's status as the most important trackmaster of the '90s, and no style is more distinctive. Aggressive and raw, a Premier track is an instantly recognizable soundclash of battling loops and heavy scratching -- all of them perfectly timed -- that evokes the sound of Brooklyn better than anyone. Besides helming albums for Gang Starr, Premier's productions appear on many of the East Coast's most important records of the '90s, including Nas' Illmatic, the Notorious B.I.G.'s Ready to Die, Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt, Jeru the Damaja's The Sun Rises in the East, and Mos Def's Black on Both Sides. In the following decades, Premier attained his highest level of pop success while continuing to power the nationwide rap underground. Born Chris Martin, DJ Premier spent time in Brooklyn and Houston while growing up, and studied computer science at Prairie View A&M outside Houston. Known as Waxmaster C, he'd already learned to play a variety of instruments and also managed a record store. After moving back to Brooklyn, around 1987-1988 he came into contact with Guru, a Boston native. Guru had already formed a group named Gang Starr two years earlier (and recorded with the 45 King), but his former partner, Mike Dee, had returned to Boston. DJ Premier and Guru signed to Wild Pitch and released a debut single ("Manifest") and album (No More Mr. Nice Guy). Gang Starr's interest in melding hip-hop with jazz informed the record, and they were invited to add to the soundtrack for Spike Lee's 1990 film Mo' Better Blues. Their subsequent work was much more mature and unified, with a pair of instant East Coast classics (1991's Step in the Arena and 1992's Daily Operation) arriving in short order. DJ Premier had been working with other vocalists for years, and his productions for the 1990 landmark Funky Technician by Lord Finesse and DJ Mike Smooth cemented his status as one of the best producers around. He soon began recording exclusively at D&D Studios, a spot soon to become a shrine for hip-hop fans (thanks in large part to his own work). The year 1994 was a huge one for Premier, probably the best year for any rap producer ever; in addition to dropping another Gang Starr classic, Hard to Earn, his productions appeared on five-star, all-time classics by Nas (Illmatic), the Notorious B.I.G. (Ready to Die), and Jeru the Damaja (The Sun Rises in the East), as well as Big Daddy Kane and Branford Marsalis' Buckshot LeFonque project. Though his workload dropped off considerably during the late '90s, he still managed to place tracks on three of the first four Jay-Z albums. Premier returned in force with the new millennium, including shots with Common, D.I.T.C., D'Angelo, Jadakiss, and Snoop Dogg. Gang Starr went out in top form with The Ownerz, their sixth and last album, in 2003, after which Premier remained consistently active. Each year into the late 2010s, he was involved with anywhere between several and over a dozen projects. His greatest commercial success was achieved with several co-productions on Christina Aguilera's Back to Basics, including the Top Ten pop hit "Ain't No Other Man." Apart from the occasional mainstream gig, such as remixing Maroon 5 and scratching on a Chris Brown track, the producer worked primarily in the underground and issued the occasional solo project, such as multiple volumes of Beats That Collected Dust. He collaborated extensively with Bumpy Knuckles (Kolexxxion, 2012) and Royce da 5'9" (PRhyme, 2015), and added to his West Coast contacts by clocking studio time with Dr. Dre ("Animals," 2015), Miguel ("2 Lovin U," 2017), and MC Eiht (Which Way Iz West, 2017). He was among the executive producers of VH1's The Breaks, for which he also provided music. ~ John Bush & Andy Kellman, Rovi

Since Simon Green started Bonobo the expansion and acceleration has been constant, from his beginning in small clubs as a solo DJ / producer, to working with Erykah Badu, Ólafur Arnalds and Jon Hopkins to remixing Michael Kiwanuka, Gorillaz, George Fitzgerald and London Grammar. He has received three GRAMMY nominations, played huge arenas and festivals from a three-times sold out Alexandra Palace to Fuji Rock – and most recently landed a top ten album in multiple countries, top five at home in the UK and a Billboard dance album number one in the US, with 2017's Migration. But as Green embarked on the Migration tour, this constant acceleration combined with a feeling of the world in flux became gruelling. He began to retreat into himself – and for the first time, he wasn’t writing new music as he travelled. Exhausted and wrung-out, he was wrestling with feelings he found hard to express. But slowly, even in lockdown he found inspiration from being in nature – “finding the places that were alien and unique and awe inspiring” – from recalling what he loved about crowds and dancefloors, and from reconnecting with collaborators like Jamila Woods, Joji, Kadhja Bonet, Jordan Rakei, O’Flynn and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. So “Fragments” is the sound of both struggle and isolation – personally and collectively – and of a surging, joyous return: a gorgeous reminder of how out of such trials, creativity and hope can emerge at the most unexpected moments.

Rough but smooth male vocal quartet Jagged Edge formed in Atlanta, Georgia, consisting of identical twin brothers Brandon "Case Dinero" Casey and Brian "Brasco" Casey, who had moved from their native Hartford, Connecticut; Kyle Norman (aka "Quick"), whom they'd met through church activities, and Richard Wingo (aka "Wingo Dollar"), a late addition to the group suggested by Xscape's Kandi Burruss, who took their demo to super-producer Jermaine Dupri. Jagged Edge signed to Dupri's Columbia-distributed So So Def label and in the summer of 1997 released their debut single, "The Way That You Talk," featuring appearances by Dupri and Da Brat. It reached the Top 40 of the R&B chart and was also a pop chart entry. Early in 1998, Jagged Edge released their first album, A Jagged Era, which went gold and spawned the Top 20 R&B, Top 40 pop hit "Gotta Be." Their next single, "He Can't Love U," appeared in the fall of 1998 and reached the Top Five of the R&B chart and the Top 20 of the pop chart, going gold in the process. It prefaced the group's second album, J.E. Heartbreak (its title a nod to New Edition's "N.E. Heart Break"), which topped the R&B chart and hit the Top Ten of the pop chart, selling over two million copies and spawning the number one R&B hits "Let's Get Married" (also Top 20 pop) and "Promise" (also Top Ten pop). By the time of the release of Jagged Edge's third album, Jagged Little Thrill, in 2001, its leadoff single, "Where the Party At" (featuring Nelly), was nearing the R&B Top Ten and was in the pop Top 40. Hard and Jagged Edge followed, respectively, in 2003 and 2006. For 2007's The Baby Makin' Project, the group switched to Island, but Dupri had since taken up the post of president at the label's urban division, making the transition from Columbia a welcome and natural one. The album debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200. Jagged Edge then moved to Slip N Slide, where they released The Remedy in 2011. Three years later, they reunited with Dupri and So So Def for J.E. Heartbreak II. A Greatest Hits collection arrived in 2016 before the group returned to the studio to record their ninth full-length, 2017's Layover. Released that summer, Layover featured their typically rich vocal harmonies with contemporary production that included some trap inspiration. ~ John Bush & William Ruhlmann, Rovi

LCD Soundsystem debuted with "Losing My Edge," a single that became one of the most talked-about indie releases of 2002. A self-effacing spoof of the outrageous pissing contests that often occur whenever music geeks cross paths ("I was at the first Can show in Cologne," etc.) laid over a puttering electronic beat with the occasional bursts of discoid clatter, the track was also one of the first released on the DFA label. Several magazines and newspapers would eventually declare James Murphy, the man behind both LCD Soundsystem and DFA, to be one of the coolest people on the planet. Years of obscurity and the occasional poor decision preceded this. Just before Murphy began to cut his teeth in the '90s, first as a member of Pony (an average post-hardcore band with heavy debts to its inspirations) and then with Speedking (a much stronger, more unique band), he passed up the opportunity to write for the popular sitcom Seinfeld. All the time spent toiling in indie rock took a toll on Murphy, but he built his own studio and became increasingly adept at engineering and producing other bands. While working on David Holmes' Bow Down to the Exit Sign, he struck up a relationship with programmer/producer Tim Goldsworthy that developed into a partnership. By the end of 2002, there were several releases on Murphy and Goldsworthy's DFA label, most of which involved the duo in some capacity. LCD's "Losing My Edge," backed with an excellent neo-post-punk dance track called "Beat Connection," was one of them. Murphy eventually scattered three other LCD singles through the end of 2004 and released the full-length LCD Soundsystem in January 2005. At the time of its release, the DFA label was more popular than ever; Murphy and Goldsworthy had remixes for Metro Area, N.E.R.D., Le Tigre, and Junior Senior behind them, as well as failed sessions with Britney Spears that might have benefited from an interpreter. Janet Jackson was another unlikely admirer seeking the duo's assistance, but Murphy didn't bother to follow up on her request. Murphy did respond to Nike, who commissioned him to record a lengthy piece of music as part of a promotion. 45:33, released in October 2006, was aimed at joggers, but Murphy later confessed that he didn't jog himself -- mixed martial arts were more his thing, he claimed -- and was driven by the opportunity to make something in the vein of Manuel Göttsching's early-'80s electronic landmark E2-E4. (DFA would later issue 45:33 on CD, breaking the track into six parts and adding three additional cuts.) The second proper LCD Soundsystem album, Sound of Silver, was released in March 2007. It contained Murphy's most affecting songwriting and peaked within the Top 50 of the Billboard 200. Led by the single "Drunk Girls" and an accompanying Spike Jonze-directed video, LCD Soundsystem's third studio album, This Is Happening, was released three years later. Riding high on the acclaim the album garnered, the band toured the world with fellow dance-pop group Hot Chip for much of 2010. While in London on June 29 of that year, the group recorded a full-band session at Miloco Studio. The freewheeling recording of the show was released by DFA as London Sessions in January of 2011. Right around this time, Murphy announced that he was retiring the LCD Soundsystem name. The band played a farewell show at a sold-out Madison Square Garden in New York on April 2, 2011 and released the set the following year as The Long Goodbye: LCD Soundsystem Live at Madison Square Garden. In the years following, Murphy kept very busy with a variety of projects. He produced Arcade Fire's Reflektor, remixed a David Bowie track, designed special 11-foot tall speakers for DJs, created his own brand of coffee, opened a wine bar, and did the score for Noah Baumbach's film When We Were Young. In late 2015, rumors began circulating that LCD was re-forming, but these were quickly shot down by the band's label, DFA. These denials proved to be a smoke screen and the group issued a new single, "Christmas Will Break Your Heart," before the year's end. Soon after, they announced plans to headline Coachella, play a series of live dates, and release a new album in 2016. While the effort did not materialize that year, LCD did deliver a pair of songs in May 2017, "Call the Police" and "American Dream." They proved to be the first singles from American Dream, the band's fourth proper album. Featuring Murphy playing most of the instruments, with help from live bandmembers multi-instrumentalist Al Doyle, vocalist Nancy Whang, keyboardist Gavin Russom, bassist Tyler Pope, and drummer Pat Mahoney, the record was released in September of 2017 by the band's new label home Columbia. It was their first album to reach the top of the Billboard Charts and the song "Tonite" won a 2018 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. While the band was out touring the world behind the album, they stopped at Electric Lady Studios in New York to record part of their live set (along with covers of Heaven 17's "(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang" and the Human League's "Seconds") for posterity under the title Electric Lady Sessions. The LP was released in early 2019 by DFA. ~ Andy Kellman & Tim Sendra, Rovi

BIO

Toro y Moi was one of the first artists to be called chillwave due to the underwater, laid-back sounds of his 2009 single "Blessa," but that tag was soon left behind as each subsequent record and project tackled by Chaz Bundick (later Chaz Bear) headed off in an unpredictable direction. Whether digging into '80s R&B, house music (on the Les Sins side project in 2014), space-age pop, prog, or guitar-heavy power pop (as on 2015's What For?), Bear is never satisfied to stick to a formula when he could experiment instead. Even when tapping into the mainstream zeitgeist, as on 2017's modern R&B-inspired Boo Boo or the Daft Punk-meets-Frank Ocean 2019 album Outer Peace, Bear's innate melodic gifts and sonic shapeshifting qualities always shine through. Bundick started making bedroom recordings under the name Toro y Moi in his native Columbia, South Carolina in 2001. Growing up, he'd heard the disparate sounds of funk, soul, and new wave around the house and these influences colored his musical experiments. As he continued recording, so did the work of more contemporary artists like Beach House, Dilla, and Animal Collective. Along with recording many albums on his own, Bundick also played in bands. The Toro y Moi recordings were the ones that caught the ear of Carpark Records, however, and they released the "Blessa"/"109" single in 2009. The dreamlike, lo-fi songs were proto-typical chillwave, and Toro y Moi, along with Neon Indian and Washed Out -- whose Ernest Greene was a childhood friend of Bundick's -- were seen as the vanguard artists of the nascent style. The first Toro y Moi album on Carpark, the murky, home-cooked Causers of This, was released in 2010 and got a lot of coverage in the press and some high-profile fans like Kanye West. After making an album that relied on samples alone, Bundick swung in the other direction for 2011's Underneath the Pine, using real instruments and incorporating space age bachelor pad and disco influences into his sound. The end result wasn't very chillwave by design, and it showed that Bundick had more to offer than murky, bedroom dream pop. That same year, he released the Freaking Out EP, which moved even closer to the dancefloor and featured a shimmering cover of Alexander O'Neal & Cherrelle's 1985 R&B hit "Saturday Love." After Bundick moved to Berkeley, California in 2012, his music began to reflect his separation from loved ones, giving his next album a slightly more melancholy feel. Anything in Return was released in early 2013 on Carpark. His next move was to give himself over to dance music entirely, releasing the Michael album in 2014 under the name Les Sins. It was the first release on Bundick's new label, Company, which he co-ran with Carpark. The same year, he also collaborated with Vinyl Williams on an album of new age prog songs titled Trance Zen Dental Spa. The next Toro y Moi album, 2015's What For?, featured contributions from guitarist Julian Lynch and Unknown Mortal Orchestra's Ruban Nielson, and was the project's most straightforward collection of guitar-heavy pop songs to date. Bundick took an expanded live band out on the road, filming/recording one of the concerts, then releasing it as Live from Trona in 2016. He also hooked up with the jazz-prog duo the Mattson 2 to record the Star Stuff album, which Company issued in late 2016. By the time that album hit the shelves, Bundick had begun recording another Toro y Moi album. It was a time of soul-searching on both personal and musical levels, leading Bundick to change his name to Chaz Bear and shift musical gears back to his trademark ambient R&B chillwave sound. Taking inspiration from artists like Frank Ocean and Oneohtrix Point Never, Boo Boo introduced more chill and space into the mix. It featured Bear playing most of the instruments, apart from contributions from live keyboardist Anthony Ferraro and vocalist Madeline Kenney, and was released by Carpark in July 2017. After releasing Toro y Rome, Vol. 1, a five-song EP made with Philadelphia rapper Rome Fortune in 2018, Bear issued the sixth full-length Toro y Moi album, Outer Peace, early in 2019. The record showed the influence of Daft Punk and the Caribbean funk of keyboardist Wally Badarou while also dipping into modern pop sounds. In what proved to be a prolific year, he also put out the exploratory chillwave mixtape Soul Trash. ~ Tim Sendra & Margaret Reges, Rovi

Bringing Nurture to life meant overcoming creative drought, depression and family illness. “It was an extensive period of just total emotional struggle,” says the North Carolina-based artist. Nurture is made up of songs he found on the other side: adventurous, uplifting diaries of his own path back to happiness, each one imploring listeners suffering their own periods of hardship to hold on. Everything’s changed since Robinson’s 2010 arrival, from sonic landscapes to literal surroundings. Porter himself notes the immense effect of the exit from his childhood home on this new collection, shedding the comforting walls of his formative years, where 2014’s genre defining Worlds crafted an expansion for the universe of electronic music. His own precocious arrival into the collective consciousness via co-signs from the dance music’s greats now feels like merely a footnote in the time spent since, with 2016 granting the union of Robinson and longtime friend Madeon to conceive the gold certified, anime-accompanied single “Shelter”. Just a year later he’d introduce alter ego Virtual Self, a reinvention that landed him a Grammy nod and left incalculable influence in its wake. The launch of his own festival, Second Sky, would mark the final endeavor before the start of this new era. “I feel like the world is beautiful and filled with possibility, and that I want to cherish every second that I have to be alive. That description doesn’t quite capture it, but it’s as close as I can get.”

The simple power of DRAMA’s musical expression is matched only by that of their work ethic. The Chicago-based duo have bootstrapped a subtle rise on their own terms, self-releasing several EPs and mapping multiple tours with Midwestern grit. A multicultural collaboration between producer Na’el Shehade and vocalist Via Rosa, the project plays to the complementary dynamics of their unlikely pairing, blurring the lines between R&B and dance-pop, heartbreak and bliss.
Rosa grew up in a musical household; her parents played in a reggae band, they toured as a family, homeschooling Rosa into her early teens, limiting her listening primarily to Sade, oldies, Brazilian and Afrobeat music. After moving to Chicago, she connected with hip-hop collective THEMPeople. Born in Chicago, Shehade fell in love with DJ culture as a kid and took up music production and engineering; his interest eventually led to professional opportunities, including studio work with Chance the Rapper, Kanye West, and music projects for MTV and Bravo.
In early jam sessions the chemistry was clear; Rosa’s soulful delivery interlocked with Shehade’s chic Chicago house-infused production style. A lovesick sound emerged over two EPs, Gallows in 2016 and Lies After Love in 2018, and continued on to their debut album Dance Without Me in 2020.

As Big Wild, producer Jackson Stell crafts lush soundscapes and sweeping melodies that challenge the status quo of electronic music. First breaking out in 2015, Big Wild has become one of the fastest-rising electronic artists in recent years - making waves with releases such as his viral, incendiary track “Aftergold” and his Invincible EP (via Foreign Family Collective). As the next progression, in February 2019 Big Wild released his critically acclaimed debut album, Superdream, on Counter Records. The project received high praise from the likes of NPR and Billboard, as Stell pushed the boundaries as a producer and artist like never before, serving as the primary lyricist, singer and songwriter for the first time ever. Each song is diverse in sound and scope and represents the full spectrum of emotions and experiences that are central to the essence of being. Looking forward into 2022 and beyond, Stell continues to expand his musical horizons as he further ventures into a genre-less space in his writing and singing, drawing influence from pop, indie and alternative inspirations as he develops his catalog. His seemingly continuous evolution as a rising artist and his exceptional ability to meld sounds set him apart from his peers, putting him in a lane of solely his own stylistically.

Rapper, producer, and actor Q-Tip is one of the most acclaimed figures in hip-hop, a solo artist and the longtime MC with pioneering alternative hip-hop trio A Tribe Called Quest. Born Jonathan William Davis in New York City on November 20, 1970, Q-Tip co-founded A Tribe Called Quest in 1988 with schoolmates Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Malik "Phife Dawg" Taylor while they were students at the Murray Bergtraum High School for Business Careers. Tribe's debut single, "Description of a Fool," appeared in the summer of 1989, and after signing to Jive Records, the trio issued its debut LP, People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, a year later. With its fiercely intelligent, socially progressive lyrics and brilliant fusion of rap and jazz, the group emerged as one of the most popular and influential in all of hip-hop, producing such classic LPs as 1991's The Low End Theory and 1993's Midnight Marauders before disbanding in 1998. Q-Tip mounted a solo career with the 1999 release of Amplified. Home to the hit singles "Vivrant Thing" and "Breathe and Stop," Amplified rose to the Top 30 on the Billboard 200. Although it was certified gold, Q-Tip plunged into label limbo for many years afterward. His Amplified follow-up, Kamaal the Abstract, was completed in 2002 but halted by Arista; it would not receive an official release until 2009 on Jive Records. Before that, his de facto sophomore set appeared in late 2008, earning its title, The Renaissance (Universal Motown). The Grammy-nominated album included the single "Gettin Up," as well as appearances by Raphael Saadiq ("WeFight/WeLove"), Amanda Diva ("ManWomanBoogie"), Norah Jones ("Life Is Better"), and D'Angelo ("Believe"). In addition to his solo material, Q-Tip also guested on a number of notable tracks for other artists. Starting with De La Soul's 1989 single "Buddy," he has also appeared on Deee-Lite's "Groove Is in the Heart," Beastie Boys' "Get It Together," the Chemical Brothers' Grammy-winning "Galvanize" and "Go," R.E.M.'s "The Outsiders," Mark Ronson's "Bang Bang Bang," Janet Jackson's "Got 'Til It's Gone," Jay-Z's "Girls, Girls, Girls," Hiatus Kaiyote's Grammy-nominated "Nakamarra," and D'Angelo's "Ain't That Easy." He has also produced for Kanye West, Jay-Z, Run-D.M.C., Nas, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, and many more. In 2016, Q-Tip and Tribe reunited and recorded their sixth album, just before the untimely passing of Phife Dawg. Q-Tip and the surviving members toured behind We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service, which topped the Billboard 200 and went on to become one of the most critically acclaimed releases of the year. A Tribe Called Quest performed their final concert together in late 2017 in Dorset, England. The next year, Q-Tip added another notable collaboration to his catalog with a cover of Elton John's "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," a duet with Demi Lovato that featured on John's reimagined covers album, Revamp. ~ Neil Z. BIO

Since debuting in the mid-'90s, Washington, D.C.'s Thievery Corporation have remained one of the most popular acts associated with chilled-out, lounge-friendly electronic music. Initially known for making abstract, instrumental, midtempo dance music whose classification fell somewhere between trip-hop and acid jazz, their sound expanded to include vocalists and live instrumentation on 2000's The Mirror Conspiracy (their most popular album in the United States), which was heavily influenced by bossa nova and soul. Their albums, from 2002's The Richest Man in Babylon onward, have become increasingly more political, reflecting their antiwar, pro-humanity stance in addition to their appreciation of all of the world's cultures. Likewise, their music has explored several additional influences and genres, including Indian classical, hip-hop, and reggae. Following the dark psychedelia of 2005's The Cosmic Game, 2008's Radio Retaliation was a protest album incorporating styles such as Afro-beat and go-go, and the Jamaica-recorded The Temple of I & I was devoted to dub and reggae. Featuring the production skills of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, Thievery Corporation released several warmly received singles on their own Eighteenth Street Lounge (ESL) label (named after their own Washington, D.C. bar and nightclub) in 1996. Although previously known primarily among acid jazz and rare-groove DJs, the group shot to minor celebrity when a track from one of their early 12"s appeared on respected DJ/producers Kruder & Dorfmeister's mix session for Studio K7's DJ-Kicks series. Similar in many respects to that Viennese production duo, Thievery Corporation subsequently grew in popularity among a wider audience of DJs and headphonauts. The duo's debut LP, Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi, initially appeared in 1996 before seeing wider release the following year, along with a compilation of Washington, D.C.-based electronica artists titled Dubbed Out in DC (both albums were released by ESL). After signing with the British 4AD label, Thievery Corporation began to work on their second LP but were forced to postpone its release date after their tapes were stolen in a mugging. The stopgap remix compilation Abductions & Reconstructions was released in 1999, as was the duo's DJ-Kicks installment. Their second proper album, The Mirror Conspiracy, followed one year later. The release featured a greater emphasis on live instrumentation and vocals than their debut, with guest singers including Pam Bricker and Bebel Gilberto. The duo's growing fame made them a natural choice to select tracks for the 2001 Verve compilation Sounds from the Verve Hi-Fi, which contained vintage Latin jazz and bossa nova cuts from the '60s and '70s. They returned to their own work in 2002 with The Richest Man in Babylon, their first album to inject a message of protest into their music, which featured guest vocalists such as Emiliana Torrini and Shinehead. The mix album Outernational Sound and remix EP Babylon Rewound both appeared in 2004. That same year, the track "Lebanese Blonde" was featured in the highly successful Garden State soundtrack, which later won a Grammy Award. Released in 2005, the darker, more psychedelic full-length The Cosmic Game featured guest vocalists Perry Farrell, the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne, and David Byrne, and the remix compilation Versions followed in 2006. As election season approached, Thievery Corporation released the politically minded studio effort Radio Retaliation in September 2008. Featuring a guest appearance from Mr. Lif, Culture of Fear arrived in 2011 and mixed social commentary with dub tracks. Their 2014 release, Saudade, turned their music in a different direction, being a bossa nova-based effort with guest vocalists like LouLou Ghelichkhani, Karina Zeviani, and Elin Melgarejo. For their eighth studio album, 2017's The Temple of I & I, the duo temporarily relocated to Jamaica, where they could fully channel their dub/reggae influences into the recording process. The following year, more tracks from their Jamaican sessions emerged -- these were collated alongside various remixes for their 2018 companion album, Treasures from the Temple. They helped to re-launch the performance area at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2017, accompanied by up-and-coming classical musicians. To commemorate the performance, they re-recorded a selection of their live staples with Prague's Filmharmonic Orchestra, going on to release them on the compilation album Symphonik in 2020. ~ Sean Cooper, Rovi

Melding mainstream pop, trance, and dubstep, California producer Jeff Montalvo quickly amassed a cult following under the alias Seven Lions. The onetime drummer transitioned to music production in 2007, and shortly thereafter he won a competition held by the trance act Above & Beyond by remixing their song "You Got to Go." Success snowballed. At 25 years old, his debut EP, Days to Come, was mentioned on Vibe's Top Electronic Albums list of 2012, and later that year he gained attention internationally when his music picked up regular rotation on BBC's Radio 1. A second EP, Polarize, was released by Viper Recordings in April of 2013. He moved to the Casablanca label and a year later the Worlds Apart EP hit number two on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart, also landing on the Billboard 200. Continuing a slowly growing emphasis on song form, The Throes of Winter returned him to both charts in 2015 and topped the Heatseekers Albums chart. In 2017, the Creation EP became his first Billboard dance/electronic number one. The following year, Seven Lions launched his own Ophelia record label, marking the occasion with the single "Calling You Home." More label releases followed quickly including the Ocean EP with Jason Ross, and the Start Again EP, which included the single "Dreamin'," with Fiora. Also that year, he paired with Slander and Dabin on the single "First Time." ~ Jason Lymangrover & Marcy Donelson

STRFKR’s sound has morphed over the years through variations of hyper catchy, danceable pop, but on Ambient 1 - the band created its first fully instrumental album. Ambient 1 drifts through softly glowing electronic instrumentals that extract the synth core from the group’s well established synth pop sound. It’s patient, playful, and calming music that travels through passageways of chaos and anxiety on a journey towards healing. Upon completing work on the lo-fi dreaminess of Future Past Life, STRFKR’s Josh Hodges found himself returning repeatedly to albums by his favorite ambient artists and minimal composers. This growing obsession with synthesis and the culture around it also concurred with the daily darkness of the pandemic and some personal disruptions. Without spending too much time thinking about what it meant, Hodges began recording ambient experiments almost daily as a way of processing these difficult emotions. Echoes of masters like Harold Budd and Brian Eno can be heard in the angelic floating of “Work Smoothly Lifetime Peace” while tracks like “Nexus” are stormy and frenetic. In some ways, Ambient 1 is unlike anything STRFKR has created before, but when completely absorbed, it makes sense why it’s included under the STRFKR banner. Even at his most drony and experimental, Hodges can’t escape his distinctive melodic approach. Ambient 1 strips away the familiar and the expected, exposing Hodges’ signature sonic personality at a granular level.

RL Grime first came to prominence as a New York-based teenager delivering monster, viral remixes of Chief Keef’s “Love Sosa” and Kanye West’s “Mercy.” He established himself as a unique artist in his space with a striking monochromatic aesthetic, a series of animated music videos, and an annual Halloween mix that has included drops from Goosebumps author RL Stine, comedian Hannibal Buress, and Tony Hawk. After solidifying his fanbase with a few highly-regarded EPs, RL Grime independently released his first studio album, “VOID,” in 2014. It premiered as the #1 Electronic album in the United States and remained in that position for a month. At that point—with over 150 million plays, rave reviews and magazine covers, and sets at the biggest festivals in the world including Coachella & Lollapalooza—most artists would cash out. RL Grime stuck to his underground roots and limited his releases. His portfolio grew with an expanding list of collaborators that included Big Sean, Miguel, and Skrillex. And in late 2017, he emerged with “Era,” a tour-de-force single that Billboard described as “exotic, massive, and full-of-left-turns.” Its epic, cinematic sound announced a new era and an accompanying album: NOVA. RL Grime’s uncompromising artistry has paid off. NOVA was preceded by a sold-tour that included stops in Australia, Los Angeles, and New York. Its hype has only swelled in the absence of information surrounding the album, leaving fans and blogs to speculate on their own.

Just one in the cast of crucial producers who made Strictly Rhythm the premiere American house label during the early '90s, Roger Sanchez grew into a prolific remixer, world-class mainstream DJ, and top global-house name by the end of the decade. Though he concentrated more on mix albums than proper studio productions under his own name, Sanchez gained much respect with club kids as well as the dancefloor intelligentsia. Born in New York to parents of Dominican heritage, Sanchez attended Manhattan's School of Art & Design with several future hip-hop legends including Kurtis Mantronik. He was well into the graffiti and break-dancing scene during the early '80s and began DJing by the age of 13. After mixing for several years at New York hot spots like the Tunnel -- even while he was studying architecture at the Pratt Institute -- Sanchez finally left college in 1987 to give music a full-time shot. His club Ego Trip was soon booming (with Sanchez mixtapes selling briskly on Broadway) and he never looked back. By 1989, Gladys Pizarro from Strictly Rhythm Records had touched base to see if Sanchez was interested in production; one year later, he had recorded his first single, "Luv Dancin," as Underground Solution. The single's tough underground grooves charged the New York house scene, then just on the cusp of a turnover from the smooth garage sound to a rougher style influenced by European trance and techno. Despite stumbling into remixing by accident -- after giving a bad review to a single, he was tapped to rework it -- Sanchez became more than competent at the game, and beginning in 1991 he worked on tracks for Babyface, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Janet Jackson, Chic, M People, Basia, Incognito, and Soul II Soul. Later Sanchez productions -- a 1994 Latin dub-house burner named "Sumba Lumba" (as Tribal Confusion), the following year's hard-hitting Strictly 4 the Underground EP (as Roger S), and that same year's "Release Yo Self" (as Transatlantic Soul) -- cemented his status as one of Strictly Rhythm's greatest assets and one of the world's leading mainstream producers. Though his own One Records collapsed in 1995, Sanchez formed another label named Narcotic and signed up with the British club Hard Times to release his first full-length. The mix LP Hard Times: The Album featured the S-Man (with just two decks, a mixer, and a crate of records) proving his worth as a DJ in addition to his much-hyped studio work. He continued in the mix-LP vein, releasing volumes in two high-profile series (Mixmag Live!, United DJ's of America), and the Freeze collection Roger S. Mega Mix. In 1997, Narcotic Records released "Back" (as S-Men), the fruits of the dance super-group formed by Sanchez, Junior Sanchez, and DJ Sneak. One year later, Sanchez released S-Man Classics, a two-disc collection including his best remixes backed with his best own productions. A few mix albums followed during the next three years, but a full production album, First Contact, finally dropped in 2001. Sanchez launched a new label in 2002 named Stealth -- home to his impressive rate of mixes, as well as re-releases and new productions from himself as well as other artists. The following year, he won a Grammy in the category of Best Remixed Recording for his remix of No Doubt's "Hella Good." Release Yourself, his long-running terrestrial and online radio show, won an International Dance Music award for Best Podcast. The show celebrated a decade of broadcasts when the mix effort Release Yourself: 10th Anniversary Edition dropped in 2011, the same year that Sanchez joined with the Far East Movement for the single "2gether." The singles "Troubleman" and "My Roots" arrived in 2013 along with the mix album Release Yourself 13. ~ John Bush, Rovi

An American socialite, businesswoman, and wide-ranging media personality, Paris Hilton also carved a niche for herself in the music world as a live DJ and charting pop singer. Her debut album, Paris, was an international hit that reached the Top Ten of the Billboard 200 in 2006. In the years to follow, Hilton stuck to periodic singles, including 2013's "Good Time" (with Lil Wayne) and 2020's "I Blame You" (with Lodato). Born into wealth and the American equivalent of aristocracy, Paris Hilton is the oldest of Richard Hilton and Kathy Richards' four children and an heir to the family's hotel chain (her great-grandfather, Conrad Hilton, was the founder). Growing up in New York and L.A., she gained fame in 2003 with the Fox reality series The Simple Life. The show filmed Hilton and friend Nicole Richie as they tried to live on an Arkansas farm without the modern conveniences they were used to (credit cards, cell phones). It became a hit, and Hilton branched out into modeling, writing, movies, and music. Drawing inspiration from the lighthearted, summertime pop of Gwen Stefani and Ashlee Simpson, her album's first single, the Top 20-charting "Stars Are Blind," appeared in June 2006, followed by the full-length Paris in August. The set peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 and sold well internationally, including Top Ten appearances in Sweden, Poland, and New Zealand. Hilton remained in the limelight over the coming years while only releasing occasional singles. The Simple Life ended its five-season run in 2007, leading to a starring role in the film The Hottie and the Nottie (2008) and appearances on reality shows including (but not limited to) 2009's Paris Hilton's British Best Friend and, later, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Keeping Up with the Kardashians. In 2013, she partnered with Lil Wayne on the song "Good Time," following it a year later with "Come Alive," both on the Cash Money label. Her third release for the label, 2015's "High Off My Love," reached the Top Three of the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. In 2017, Hilton appeared in the music video for Demi Lovato's Top Ten hit "Sorry Not Sorry" and launched her own footwear and home decor lines. The seductive "I Need You" (Heiress Records) appeared in 2018 and hit the dance club Top 40. Hilton next teamed up with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike for "B.F.A. (Best Friend's Ass)" and with singer MATTN for "Lone Wolves," both in 2019, the same year she premiered her 25th fragrance, Electrify. In late 2020, she released the Lodato collaboration "I Blame You," a charity single to aid survivors of child abuse. ~ Marcy Donelson & Marisa Brown, Rovi

After the recent announcement of his forthcoming ‘Reincarnation Tour’, international DJ and producer Carnage returns from his 2018 hiatus with his biggest single yet - ‘Letting People Go’. 2019 is a landmark year for Carnage, in his own words: “Moving forward I want to connect with my fans in a way I never have before. I used to be scared and embarrassed to tell my story. Now I am proud of it and I want you to know it. My mother left Nicaragua, traveled through Mexico, and crossed the Rio Grande into America as an illegal immigrant to create a better life for me. I came to this country speaking little to no English. In this crazy world we all live in now I am embracing this - I am a proud immigrant. I am the American Dream and I am f*cking proud of it. I am going to use my platform to be a better role model and help all immigrants like me achieve success. This is my f*cking mission."

MAKJ—real name Mackenzie Johnson—was first exposed to DJing as a teenager racing cars professionally in China, and upon his return to the United States after two years abroad, he was determined to learn the craft for himself. MAKJ taught himself the basics thanks to YouTube and a set of used turntables, and after joining Los Angeles’ Icon Collective production school and learning to mix records from the late, legendary DJ Am, Johnson embarked on a series of successful collaborations with some of the hottest names in the DJ and EDM world, including Hardwell (“Countdown - Original Mix”); Lil Jon (“Let's Get F*cked Up,” 2014); the Bassjackers (“Derp,” 2014); Andrew W.K. and Timmy Trumpet (“Party Till We Die,” 2016); ("Shakalaka (Steve Aoki, Deorro, MAKJ & Max Styler)," 2018); and Deorro and Quintino ("Knockout," 2018). Johnson has played at some of the largest and most prestigious music festivals in the world, including Coachella, Voodoo, Electric Zoo, and Ultra. Although he remains passionate about performing live sets as an open-format DJ, Johnson has expanded into producing original tracks for other artists, developing a sound that goes beyond the EDM world in which he first gained recognition. His style focuses heavily on incorporating elements of hip-hop and other musical genres.

You don’t know Jai Wolf like you think you do. After hundreds of millions of streams on indie-dance anthems like “Indian Summer” and “Starlight,” blockbuster festival sets from Indio to India, and co-signs from the likes of Skrillex and ODESZA, it’s clear from the opening notes of Jai Wolf’s long-awaited debut album The Cure to Loneliness that he sees the expectations around his name as an opportunity to challenge convention.
The Cure to Loneliness finds Jai Wolf completing his evolution from upstart bedroom remixer to future bass DJ to builder of lush musical worlds. While still very much dancefloor-focused, some tracks on the LP conjure the angular riffage of The Strokes and Phoenix, weave melodies through the sugary happysad of M83 and CHVRCHES, or build up walls of sound like Explosions in the Sky—all while maintaining the melodious polish and evocative groove to which fans have grown so close.
“In my heart, this album is me,” says Jai Wolf. “From the sounds to the lyrics, it’s everything that I’ve always wanted to do.” Taking a different approach to many of his contemporaries under the wing of indie darling label Mom+Pop (Courtney Barnett, Flume, Jagwar Ma, Alina Baraz), Jai Wolf largely eschewed singles over the course of two years to patiently craft The Cure to Loneliness. The result is a thoughtfully framed, confidently expressed musical vision that will tug at heartstrings in 2019 and long beyond.

Redfoo may be best known as one half of the duo LMFAO, but his music career started long before he began party-rocking with nephew Sky Blu. Born in Los Angeles, Stefan Kendal Gordy -- the youngest son of Motown founder Berry Gordy, Jr. -- started his career by working with rappers in the L.A. area in the late '90s, including the Black Eyed Peas. He featured on the appropriately titled "Duet" from BEP's debut album, which would prove fortuitous almost half a decade later. In 2006, after forming LMFAO, Redfoo and Sky Blu were introduced to Jimmy Iovine at Interscope Records by head Peawill.i.am and were immediately signed. Their debut album, Party Rock, was released in 2009, and a year later they were featured on David Guetta's remix of "Gettin' Over You" with another Black Eyed Pea, Fergie. Buoyed by their growing popularity, they released their second album, Sorry for Party Rocking, which spawned a string of hit songs and high-profile tour slots. They even performed at the Super Bowl with Madonna. In 2012, the duo announced their hiatus and Redfoo released his first solo single, "Bring Out the Bottles." He joined the judge's table on the Australian X Factor series and went on to release a steady string of singles, including the Australian hit "Let's Get Ridiculous." The high-energy big-beat electro-pop songs continued to roll out through 2015, when he announced his first proper solo LP, Party Rock Mansion. Released in early 2016, Party Rock Mansion included first single "Lights Out," a guest feature from Stevie Wonder on "Where the Sun Goes," and "Juicy Wiggle," which was included on the soundtrack to the Alvin & the Chipmunks movie Road Chip. ~ Neil Z. BIO

A longstanding and influential figure in California's electronic music community, DJ, producer, and remixer Bassnectar delivers a heavy, physical blend of aggressive electronic, embracing elements of extreme bass, dubstep, breakbeat, and other IDM styles, as well as shifting tempos and contrasting dynamics that go from gentle to bruising and back during the course of a set. Known for high-energy live shows, he debuted in the early 2000s and made his first appearance on the U.S. charts in 2009 with his fifth album, Cozza Frenzy. From there, a string of dance-chart-topping albums followed, including 2014's Noise vs. Beauty, his first number one. Additionally, a significant amount of Bassnectar's music also has a strong activist streak, which he uses to promote social and political causes, as well as to foster a sense of community. Born Lorin Ashton in Santa Cruz in 1978, he was raised in a bohemian environment and claims to have been introduced to the power of bass by the rumbling of a minor earthquake he experienced as a child. As a teenager, he was exposed to world music by an uncle who brought him a set of hand drums and recordings of African and Latin music; at the same time, the youngster had become a serious thrash metal fan, and was also interested in grunge (particularly Nirvana) and hardcore rap (especially N.W.A). Ashton taught himself to play guitar and formed an extreme metal band, becoming a fixture on the local grindcore scene until he attended his first rave in the fall of 1995. He was immediately won over by the sense of community in the rave scene as well as the music, and he began attending raves as often as he could, as well as helping to organize and promote events. In 1996, Ashton started learning how to DJ, and coupled with his earlier experience in percussion, he recorded four-track demos with his band and studied electronic music at the University of California in Santa Cruz, soon mastering the basics of spinning and producing dance music. He started producing recordings for other acts in his spare time, and in 2001 he was invited to remix a track by Michael Franti & Spearhead for a single. Later that same year, the first Bassnectar album, Freakbeat for the Beatfreaks, was released; Ashton produced and released on his own label, Amorphous Music. While his first few albums earned him a buzz on the indie electronic scene, the fourth Bassnectar album, 2004's Diverse Systems of Throb, expanded his audience and influence. After that, Bassnectar began issuing a steady stream of albums, singles, and podcasts in which he collaborated with artists including KRS-One, Ellie Goulding, Perry Farrell, Lupe Fiasco, Rye Rye, Buckethead, and Gogol Bordello, as well as producers Diplo, BT, DJ Vadim, and Rjd2. Divergent Spectrum, released in 2011, was his first album to reach the Billboard charts. One year later, Vava Voom broke into the Top 40, and his 2014 LP, Noise vs. Beauty, reached number 21. Bassnectar also became a popular live attraction, spinning up to 150 nights a year at venues ranging from clubs and warehouses to festivals such as Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza. He staged his first Bass Center Festival in 2010, and the events (roughly twice a year) grew in size and stature until Bass Center 8 filled Madison Square Garden in October 2014. Into the Sun was released in 2015, with the bonus-track CD Mixtape 13 added to the album's limited-edition version. The album Unlimited followed in 2016 with Rye Rye, Zion I, and the Glitch Mob as guests. The following year saw Ashton issue Reflective, a six-track EP with collaborators Dorfex Bos and G Jones. A sequel, Reflective, Pt. 2, was also released that year. Before the arrival of Reflective, Pt. 3, he joined rappers Big Boi and Killer Mike on Tom Morello's 2018 single "Rabbit's Revenge." Reflective, Pt. 4 appeared in 2019 and included the single "Dive" featuring RD. Early 2020 saw the release of the single "Nice & Easy" featuring Rodney P ahead of the arrival of the full-length All Colors, which was issued later that June. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
