Known for a pop-oriented synthesis of numerous styles, including house, garage, dubstep, and bass, along with well-timed vocal collaborations, Disclosure are one of dance music's most successful production teams. Although they broke through while the path to commercial success was shortening for acts classified as EDM (electronic dance music), the duo, consisting of English siblings Guy and Howard Lawrence, distinguished themselves with a deeper awareness of underground dance music dating back to the disco era. After debuting in 2010, the pair quickly accelerated to making lustrous, impeccably assembled pop songs, led by the global 2012 hit "Latch," featuring the then-obscure <a href="spotify:artist:2wY79sveU1sp5g7SokKOiI">Sam Smith</a>. The approach continued with the chart-topping, Grammy-nominated albums Settle and Caracal, issued respectively in 2013 and 2015, which added the likes of <a href="spotify:artist:2VAnyOxzJuSAj7XIuEOT38">AlunaGeorge</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:14L5rpGTLVUz1pD8fUeJB1">Eliza Doolittle</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:1XkoF8ryArs86LZvFOkbyr">Mary J. Blige</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:1Xyo4u8uXC1ZmMpatF05PJ">the Weeknd</a> to their circle. They returned in 2018 with a series of singles and in 2020 offered their third album, the similarly guest-heavy Energy. Their first commercially issued mix, an entry into the DJ-Kicks series, appeared in 2021, and they continued their return to purely club-driven music with their first independently issued album, 2023's Alchemy, and singles such as 2024's "Arachnids." Children of musicians, siblings Guy and Howard Lawrence absorbed music throughout their upbringing in the town of Reigate in Surrey, England. They learned to play multiple instruments as kids and studied music at Reigate College, all the while immersing themselves in hip-hop and house, as well as dubstep and bass, the latest developments in the U.K. hardcore continuum. Already acquainted with soul, funk, and disco from their household environment, the siblings traced current underground club music back to '80s Chicago house and Detroit techno, connected those developments to '90s U.K. garage, and applied their numerous inspirations to a modern hybrid sound that grew increasingly distinctive. Early material uploaded to MySpace in 2010 led to interest from the Moshi Moshi label, which released the scruffy dubstep-oriented tracks "Offline Dexterity" and "Street Light Chronicle" as a single later that year. The Lawrences continued to find their footing through mid-2012, a period during which they released singles and EPs for <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Transparent%22">Transparent</a>, <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Make+Mine%22">Make Mine</a>, and <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Greco-Roman%22">Greco-Roman</a>. The last of those independent outlets issued The Face EP, the first Disclosure release to feature vocalists instead of processed vocal samples. Bolstered by a U.K. deal with the <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Universal%22">Universal</a>-distributed <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22PMR%22">PMR</a> label, Disclosure made a commercial breakthrough with "Latch," an atmospheric and loping ballad featuring co-songwriting from <a href="spotify:artist:0lwmhJGJcTgbcY4bnXGDgj">Jimmy Napes</a> and a bursting lead vocal from <a href="spotify:artist:2wY79sveU1sp5g7SokKOiI">Sam Smith</a>. More pop-oriented than Disclosure's previous output, the song sent the Lawrences and the previously obscure <a href="spotify:artist:2wY79sveU1sp5g7SokKOiI">Smith</a> into the mainstream. Released in October 2012, it peaked at number 11 during a 55-week stay on the U.K. chart. By the time parent album Settle was out the following May, the duo scored additional hits with the <a href="spotify:artist:2VAnyOxzJuSAj7XIuEOT38">AlunaGeorge</a> collaboration "White Noise," which went to number two, and the <a href="spotify:artist:14L5rpGTLVUz1pD8fUeJB1">Eliza Doolittle</a> showcase "You & Me," which peaked at number six. In the U.S., where the duo secured another <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Universal%22">Universal</a> distribution deal via <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Cherrytree%22">Cherrytree</a> and <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Interscope%22">Interscope</a>, "Latch" became a sleeper hit. It first entered the Hot 100 in April 2014, reached number seven during a chart run of 19 weeks, and eventually went multi-platinum. Settle topped the U.K. album chart and the U.S. electronic chart. It was nominated for the U.K. Mercury Prize and in the U.S. was nominated for a 2014 Grammy Award in the category of Best Dance/Electronic Album. The Lawrences' stateside stock continued to rise. They produced a pair of tracks on <a href="spotify:artist:1XkoF8ryArs86LZvFOkbyr">Mary J. Blige</a>'s The London Sessions, released in late 2014. Only a couple weeks later, they received their second Grammy nomination, this time in the category of Best Dance Recording, for a <a href="spotify:artist:1XkoF8ryArs86LZvFOkbyr">Blige</a>-fronted version of "F for You" that appeared on a deluxe edition of Settle. All this success, plus a world tour, led to increased collaborative star power for the second Disclosure album. Released in September 2015 on <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22PMR%22">PMR</a> in the U.K. and <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Capitol%22">Capitol</a> in the U.S., Caracal featured guest lead vocals from <a href="spotify:artist:06nevPmNVfWUXyZkccahL8">Gregory Porter</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:2wY79sveU1sp5g7SokKOiI">Sam Smith</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:163tK9Wjr9P9DmM0AVK7lm">Lorde</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:1Xyo4u8uXC1ZmMpatF05PJ">the Weeknd</a> on its singles, and affirmed the duo's affinity for R&B with strong cuts fronted by <a href="spotify:artist:0r0KdmVS1Er3kaFnl1KPog">Kwabs</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:360IAlyVv4PCEVjgyMZrxK">Miguel</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:7aFTOGFDEqDtJUCziLVsVC">Nao</a>. Like the debut, Caracal topped the U.K. pop and U.S. electronic charts. Additionally, it debuted in the Top Ten of the Billboard 200 and was up that year for the Best Dance/Electronica Album Grammy. Following Moog for Love, a three-track EP highlighted by "Feel Like I Do" with <a href="spotify:artist:3dkbV4qihUeMsqN4vBGg93">Al Green</a>, the Lawrences took a break. They returned in 2018 with a slew of singles starting with "Ultimatum," a sparkling collaboration with <a href="spotify:artist:4G5ZJny3HvX6Il7eHVfnNC">Fatoumata Diawara</a> that led to the brothers' fourth Grammy nomination. The following year saw the duo hit the Top Ten in the U.K. and U.S. as producers of <a href="spotify:artist:6LuN9FCkKOj5PcnpouEgny">Khalid</a>'s "Talk," which led to yet another Grammy nomination, this time for Record of the Year, one of the "big four" categories. <a href="spotify:artist:6LuN9FCkKOj5PcnpouEgny">Khalid</a> was then the featured artist on "Know Your Worth," Disclosure's first single of 2020. A collaboration with <a href="spotify:artist:3Gm5F95VdRxW3mqCn8RPBJ">Aminé</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:3r1XkJ7vCs8kHBSzGvPLdP">Slowthai</a> ("My High") and another one with <a href="spotify:artist:4G5ZJny3HvX6Il7eHVfnNC">Diawara</a> ("Douha [Mali Mal]") increased anticipation for the August release of Disclosure's third proper album, Energy, which appeared on multiple Billboard charts. Having fulfilled their major-label contract, the duo issued the five-track EP Never Enough independently in 2021. They also mixed the 75th volume of <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22%21K7%22">!K7</a>'s long-running DJ-Kicks series, focusing on deep, shimmering house and ending the set with an atmospheric jungle track. They established a label called <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Apollo+Records%22">Apollo Records</a> and released singles with <a href="spotify:artist:2qxJFvFYMEDqd7ui6kSAcq">Zedd</a> ("You've Got to Let Go If You Want to Be Free") and <a href="spotify:artist:5KKpBU5eC2tJDzf0wmlRp2">RAYE</a> ("Waterfall") in 2022. Alchemy, a full-length with no featured guests or samples, appeared in 2023, shifting the focus from dance-pop to funky house and garage, with one drum'n'bass track ("Higher Than Ever Before," co-produced by Cirkut). This track received a nomination in the category of Best Dance/Electronic Recording for the 2024 Grammy Awards. Following Alchemy (The Remixes), the duo's first original material of 2024 was the celebratory disco-house single "She's Gone, Dance On," which charted in the U.K. This was followed by the <a href="spotify:artist:5Igpc9iLZ3YGtKeYfSrrOE">Chris Lake</a> collaboration "in2minds" and the darker, more mystical "Arachnids." ~ Andy Kellman

The London-based electronic outfit Rudimental originally started out in 2009 as the production duo Piers Agget and Kesi Dryden. Years later, they made their debut as artists with their U.K. number one single "Feel the Love." Agget's DJ'ing brought him into contact with DJ Locksmith, who joined the pair, followed later by a chance meeting with Amir Amor at a studio in Hoxton, London. Rudimental's first release, 2011's dancehall-inspired "Deep in the Valley," appeared on garage, grime, and dubstep label Black Butter and was quickly followed by "Speeding" and "Spoons." Picked up by Asylum Records/Warner Music off the back of their first few singles, 2012 saw the release of the drum'n'bass roller "Feel the Love." Championed by Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1, the single reached the top of the U.K. charts the same weekend as the four-piece played on their home turf at the Radio 1 2012 Hackney Weekender. In 2013, Rudimental's debut album Home arrived. Working with some of the U.K.'s finest talent, including the voice of 2012 Emeli Sandé, the album's mix of dubstep, R&B, house, and drum'n'bass received positive reviews and went straight to the number one spot on the U.K. album chart. Hit singles from the album continued into 2014, including the U.K. number one "Waiting All Night," which won a BRIT Award for Best British Single. Rudimental scored another big hit in 2015 with the Ed Sheeran collaboration "Bloodstream," and geared up for the release of their second full-length, We the Generation, which included collaborations with Dizzee Rascal, Anne-Marie, MNEK, Lianne La Havas, Bobby Womack, and several others. The second Sheeran feature on the album, "Lay It All on Me," became the duo's first U.S.-charting song and their eighth U.K. Top 40 track. The song also went platinum in Australia, Denmark, Italy, New Zealand, and the U.K. They closed 2017 by recruiting James Arthur for the single "Sun Comes Up." The following year, Rudimental issued a handful of high-profile collaborations, including "Let Me Live" with Major Lazer, Anne-Marie, and Mr. Eazi; "Walk Alone" with Tom Walker; "Summer Love" with Rita Ora; and the multi-platinum, chart-topping "These Days" with Jess Glynne, Macklemore, and Dan Caplen. These singles all appeared on their third full-length release, Toast to Our Differences, which landed in early 2019. ~ Rich Wilson

In a moment of clarity while on tour, Chris Lake felt an undeniable urge to refocus his sound and career. “I ended up back in England where I lived for many years with my family, in my mother’s spare room,” he says. “It was like going back to the old me to find the new me.” Lake’s credits include several Billboard chart-toppers, a platinum record, a Grammy nomination, a successful record label, and a Midas touch for supporting emerging talent. Enter 2017 and he’s showing no signs of slowing. He kicked off the year with a new record label called “Black Book Records”. The debut release “Operator ft. Dances With White Girls”, was the Holy Ship! anthem by the end of January and gained support from almost every house DJ - from Claude Vonstroke and Green Velvet to Disclosure and Duke Dumont. The viral lyrics became unavoidable at spring festivals. March saw OWSLA release “I Want You” with a gory mind-bending video that’s gained over 2M views. By April a compilation Chris co-curated with Skrillex was released called HOWSLA. It put an emphasis on forward thinking four to the floor records by young producers. The compilation went to #1 in the iTunes Dance Chart and was celebrated at a live-streamed release party. Not only is Chris Lake feeling inspired, he’s overflowing with work. “I’ve got enough material to release a record every 4 weeks for the next 18 months”.

BIO

Producer, singer, and songwriter James Blake is known for his unique style, which wraps aching, gently sung R&B vocals around the deep bass and minimal rhythmic elements of dubstep. He arrived in 2009 with a series of 12" singles and achieved both critical acclaim and worldwide fame following his self-titled 2011 album. His renown continued to expand over the next several years, and he collaborated with pop icons like <a href="spotify:artist:6vWDO969PvNqNYHIOW5v0m">Beyoncé</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:2YZyLoL8N0Wb9xBt1NhZWg">Kendrick Lamar</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:4LEiUm1SRbFMgfqnQTwUbQ">Bon Iver</a>. His second album, 2013's Overgrown, earned him the prestigious Mercury Prize. Commercial success worldwide came in the mid-2010s, with high chart placings (as well as critical praise) for 2016's The Colour in Anything and 2019's Assume Form. 2021 saw Blake issue his fifth long-player, Friends That Break Your Heart, which included features from <a href="spotify:artist:7tYKF4w9nC0nq9CsPZTHyP">SZA</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:6U3ybJ9UHNKEdsH7ktGBZ7">JID</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:29gIYsdyccGoUc6qgkZeTK">SwaVay</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:2Oq3sgFa2HSvRY0vL6bDxN">Monica Martin</a>. He revisited his earlier, dubstep-influenced sound with 2023's Grammy-nominated Playing Robots Into Heaven and collaborated with <a href="spotify:artist:6icQOAFXDZKsumw3YXyusw">Lil Yachty</a> on the next year's joint effort Bad Cameo. Born James Blake Litherland in London in 1988, Blake was raised in a musical family. He was classically trained in piano from a young age and focused on musical studies throughout his education. While still very young, he and his friends became fixated on electronic music, in particular the emerging dubstep sound that was beginning in London in the mid-aughts. He took inspiration from early U.K. dubstep artists like <a href="spotify:artist:0uCCBpmg6MrPb1KY2msceF">Burial</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:1FvQZpPhaVvSoQnpslxnvb">Distance</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:2jbP92oFLWqPqogflK1wlW">Skream</a> and merged it with influences from textural R&B innovators like <a href="spotify:artist:336vr2M3Va0FjyvB55lJEd">D'Angelo</a> while developing his first original tracks. Blake's R&B-sampling strain of dubstep first arrived in the form of his Air & Lack Thereof 12" on the <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Hemlock%22">Hemlock</a> label in 2009. He received quite the endorsement when the heralded <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Soul+Jazz%22">Soul Jazz</a> label picked the track up for their Steppas' Delight 2 compilation that same year. Blake raised his profile every few months during 2010 -- something of a breakout year for him -- with a succession of warmly received 12" releases: The Bells Sketch (<a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Hessle+Audio%22">Hessle Audio</a>, March), CMYK (<a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22R%26S%22">R&S</a>, June), Klavierwerke (<a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22R%26S%22">R&S</a>, October), and the single-sided Limit to Your Love (<a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Atlas%22">Atlas</a>, November). The last of the series -- a cover of a song by <a href="spotify:artist:6CWTBjOJK75cTE8Xv8u1kj">Feist</a> in which Blake's heartfelt vocal was placed front and center -- served as a precursor to his first full-length, issued the following February. Titled James Blake, it made a major impression, and was eventually nominated for a Mercury Prize but lost to <a href="spotify:artist:12VaqyEhgwDRuFfEqbnrpz">PJ Harvey</a>'s Let England Shake. Blake returned to <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Hemlock%22">Hemlock</a> for the Order 12", then reverted to <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Atlas%22">Atlas</a> for Enough Thunder, a six-track EP with a <a href="spotify:artist:4LEiUm1SRbFMgfqnQTwUbQ">Bon Iver</a> collaboration and a cover of <a href="spotify:artist:5hW4L92KnC6dX9t7tYM4Ve">Joni Mitchell</a>'s "A Case of You." Yet another 12", Love What Happened Here, was out by the end of 2011. Blake spent much of 2012 working on his second album, releasing new work under the name Harmonimix, and performing less often as the new songs percolated. In April 2013, his second album Overgrown appeared, featuring collaborations with <a href="spotify:artist:7MSUfLeTdDEoZiJPDSBXgi">Brian Eno</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:4iCwCMnqsNZ6atvRiADgtn">RZA</a>. It won that year's Mercury Prize, and Blake's songwriting was acknowledged when "Retrograde," one of the album's highlights, won an Ivor Novello Award in the category of Best Contemporary Song. Apart from an <a href="spotify:artist:4eGpmrqhS3o2e80Bs1841W">Airhead</a> collaboration and an EP on his <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%221-800+Dinosaur%22">1-800 Dinosaur</a> label, little was heard from Blake for three years. He resurfaced in April 2016 with contributions to <a href="spotify:artist:6vWDO969PvNqNYHIOW5v0m">Beyoncé</a>'s Lemonade. A couple weeks later, The Colour in Anything, his third album, arrived with only a few hours' advance notice. Recorded in England and at <a href="spotify:artist:1EpmQFTiJbcxzwbLpuUL8L">Rick Rubin</a>'s studio in Malibu, California, it included input from <a href="spotify:artist:4LEiUm1SRbFMgfqnQTwUbQ">Bon Iver</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:2h93pZq0e7k5yf4dywlkpM">Frank Ocean</a>. The album peaked within the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 and topped the U.S. Dance/Electronic chart. That year, Blake also contributed to <a href="spotify:artist:2h93pZq0e7k5yf4dywlkpM">Frank Ocean</a>'s Endless, <a href="spotify:artist:68kEuyFKyqrdQQLLsmiatm">Vince Staples</a>' Prima Donna, and <a href="spotify:artist:0Y5tJX1MQlPlqiwlOH1tJY">Travis Scott</a>'s Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight. He continued into 2017 with appearances on <a href="spotify:artist:3nFkdlSjzX9mRTtwJOzDYB">Jay-Z</a>'s 4:44 and <a href="spotify:artist:3NUtpWpGDoffm3RCGhSHtl">Mount Kimbie</a>'s Love What Survives; he also produced "Element" for <a href="spotify:artist:2YZyLoL8N0Wb9xBt1NhZWg">Kendrick Lamar</a>'s DAMN. In 2018, Blake was active as a co-writer/performer of two songs on the soundtrack to the superhero blockbuster Black Panther: he contributed to the single "King's Dead" alongside <a href="spotify:artist:2YZyLoL8N0Wb9xBt1NhZWg">Kendrick Lamar</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:1RyvyyTE3xzB2ZywiAwp0i">Future</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:28ExwzUQsvgJooOI0X1mr3">Jay Rock</a>, and to "Bloody Waters," also co-written by <a href="spotify:artist:2YZyLoL8N0Wb9xBt1NhZWg">Lamar</a>. "King's Dead" would go on to win 2019's Grammy for Best Rap Performance, Blake's first Grammy win after multiple nominations over the years. Several singles arrived throughout 2018, beginning in January with "If the Car Beside You Moves Ahead," followed by "Don't Miss It" in May. Throughout the year, Blake's production and vocals appeared on new albums by experimental electronic artist <a href="spotify:artist:2wPDbhaGXCqROrVmwDdCrK">Oneohtrix Point Never</a> and mainstream rapper <a href="spotify:artist:0Y5tJX1MQlPlqiwlOH1tJY">Travis Scott</a>. His fourth album, Assume Form, was released in January 2019 and included guest spots from <a href="spotify:artist:0iEtIxbK0KxaSlF7G42ZOp">Metro Boomin</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:74V3dE1a51skRkdII8y2C6">Andre 3000</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:0Y5tJX1MQlPlqiwlOH1tJY">Travis Scott</a>. The LP netted Blake another Grammy nomination, this time for Best Alternative Music Album. The following year saw him issue the EP Before, with a second EP, the aptly named Covers, arriving later that winter. In early 2021, Blake issued the single "Say What You Will" ahead of the arrival of his fifth studio effort, Friends That Break Your Heart. BIO

One of the most innovative and influential groups of their generation, Massive Attack's hypnotic sound -- a darkly sensual and cinematic fusion of hip-hop rhythms, soulful melodies, dub grooves, and choice samples -- informed decades worth of acclaimed dance and rock artists including Portishead, Beth Orton, Radiohead, TV on the Radio, and Tricky, a Massive Attack alumnus. Their history dates back to 1983 and the formation of the Wild Bunch, one of the earliest and most successful sound system/DJ collectives to arrive on the U.K. music scene. Renowned for their seamless integration of a wide range of musical styles, from punk to reggae to R&B, the group's parties quickly became can't-miss events for the Bristol club crowd, and at the peak of their popularity they drew crowds so enormous that the local live music scene essentially ground to a halt. When the Wild Bunch folded during the mid-'80s, two of its members -- Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles and Grant "Daddy G" Marshall -- teamed with local graffiti artist 3D (born Robert del Naja) to form Massive Attack in 1987. Another Wild Bunch alum, Nellee Hooper, split his time between the new group and his other project, Soul II Soul. The group's first single, "Daydreaming," appeared in 1990, featuring the sultry vocals of singer Shara Nelson and raps by Tricky, another one-time Wild Bunch collaborator. The classic "Unfinished Sympathy" followed, as did another compelling effort, "Safe from Harm." Finally, in 1991 Massive Attack issued their debut LP, Blue Lines. While by no means a huge commercial success, the record was met with major critical praise, and was dubbed an instant classic in many quarters. Nelson, featured on many of the album's most memorable tracks, exited for a solo career soon after, and the group then changed its name to simply "Massive" to avoid any implication of approval for the U.N.'s policy toward Iraq. After a three-year layoff, Massive Attack -- their full name now properly reinstated -- resurfaced with Protection. Again working with Hooper and Tricky, they also brought into the fold vocalist Nicolette, as well as Everything But the Girl's Tracey Thorn. Three singles -- "Karmacoma," "Sly," and the title track -- were released from the LP, which was also remixed in its entirety by Mad Professor and issued as No Protection. A lengthy tour followed, and over the next several years, Massive Attack's solo work was primarily confined to remixes for artists including Garbage. They also worked with Madonna on a track for a Marvin Gaye tribute album. Finally, to promote their appearance at the annual Glastonbury music festival, the group issued the EP Risingson during the summer of 1997. The third full-length Massive Attack effort, Mezzanine, appeared in mid-1998. In addition to reggae singer Horace Andy making his third consecutive LP appearance with the group, vocal chores were handled by the Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser and newcomer Sara Jay. Mezzanine became a hit among critics, clubs, and the college crowds, spinning successful singles such as "Teardrop" and "Inertia Creeps." The album topped the U.K. chart and crossed into the Top 60 of the Billboard 200 in the U.S. A tour of America and Europe followed, but Vowles left the band after disagreeing with the artistic direction of Mezzanine. Del Naja and Marshall continued as a duo, later working with the likes of David Bowie and the Dandy Warhols, but Marshall later took a brief leave of absence to raise his family; producer Neil Davidge took up the slack. In February 2003, after a five-year wait, Massive Attack released their fourth album, 100th Window, including collaborations with mainstay Horace Andy as well as Sinéad O'Connor. Danny the Dog, released in 2004, marked the group's entry into film score work and, perhaps unsurprisingly, often sounded much more like incidental background music than a typical Massive Attack release. From there, Del Naja and Davidge scored a handful of other films -- In Prison My Whole Life, Battle in Seattle, and Trouble the Water, for which they earned an Oscar nomination -- but their work was credited to their real names or the pseudonym 100 Suns rather than Massive Attack. The fifth Massive Attack album, Heligoland, released in 2010, featured collaborations with Horace Andy, TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe, Elbow's Guy Garvey, and Martina Topley-Bird. Burial remixed the album's "Paradise Circus" and the unreleased "Four Walls" for a limited 12" release in 2011. The group returned in 2016 with a four-track EP, Ritual Spirit, on which they were joined by Tricky, Roots Manuva, and Young Fathers. Del Naja and Heligoland contributor Euan Dickinson were credited as co-producers. ~ Jason Ankeny

BIO

Sub Focus is an alias of Nick Douwma, a drum'n'bass producer and DJ who became one of the style's leading practitioners within only two years of his recording debut. Originally from London, England, Douwma is a self-taught producer who began producing music on his PC at age 13 and attained his know-how from software manuals. One of his demos eventually made its way into the hands of Andy C., the co-founder of Ram Records, one of the U.K.'s premier drum'n'bass labels. Signed initially to the Ram Records offshoot label Frequency, Douwma made his recording debut as Sub Focus in 2003 with the 12" release Down the Drain/Hot Line. A couple more 12" releases on Frequency followed in 2004, along with one on J Majik's Infrared label. Douwma's breakout year came in 2005, however, when he made his Ram Records debut, releasing X-Ray/Scarecrow and, later in the year, Frozen Solid/Juno; these 12" releases were also compiled on the Frozen Solid/X-Ray maxi-single in response to their widespread demand, as "X-Ray" was awarded Single of the Week on tastemaker Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show. Also in 2005, Douwma was chosen to remix the Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up" in promotion of the group's 15-year anniversary collection, Their Law: The Singles 1990-2005. In subsequent years, Douwma continued his affiliation with Ram Records, releasing a 12" more or less annually (i.e., Airplane/Flamenco, 2006; Special Place/Druggy, 2007; Time Warp/Join the Dots, 2008; et al.) and performing as an affiliate DJ at clubs such as Fabric and festivals such as Glastonbury. In 2009 Douwma issued his full-length debut, Sub Focus, which incorporated an eclectic fusion of futuristic house, dubstep, and electro-rock. The following year he produced the track "Kickstarts" for British singer/rapper Example, which peaked at number three on the U.K. singles chart, and in 2011 he inked a deal with Mercury, with plans to release his second album under the Sub Focus moniker in late 2012. The album sessions went on longer than expected and spawned five singles which gained Douwma increasing recognition and success with each release, culminating in the euphoric U.K. number ten hit "Endorphins" featuring vocalist Alex Clare. The success of the single was no doubt powered in part by its brilliant music video, which saw brutal riot police cracking down on dissidents in a dystopian future where music has been banned. A number of other high-profile vocalists, including Bloc Party's Kele Okereke, appeared on the eventual album, which was titled Torus and released in September 2013. After the release of Torus' final single, a version of "Close" featuring Daniel Pearce, Douwma spent some time touring and designing a new studio. He resurfaced in 2016 with a pair of singles that underscored his jungle and garage roots, "Love Divine" and "Nobody Knows." The old-school feeling continued with 2017's "Lingua," a drum'n'bass- and dancehall-tinged track featuring vocals from Stylo G. Douwma followed it a few months later with "Don't You Feel It," a collaboration with Finnish vocalist Alma.~ Jason Birchmeier

‘No Tourists’ has been written, produced and mixed over the last year by Liam Howlett in his studio in London’s Kings Cross. Though this is – Liam notes – “very much a band album”. Maxim and Keef Flint are very much present and correct, each supplying their legendary vocal skills on this, the Essex machine’s seventh studio record. Yes, there are one or two collaborators, but fundamentally this is the sound of the central Prodigy three, bringing their riotous sound to audiences old and new, two decades since they changed the face and sound of electronic music with epochal album ‘The Fat Of The Land’. Expanding on the general shape of the project, Liam says: “this album is equally aggressive as the last records – but in a different way." A musician, songwriter and studio maestro, Howlett is as rigorous and righteously Up For It as he was when he formed his 28-years-young band. He explains that, as ever, the new songs “are built to play live. That’s the one thing that brings everything together. I couldn’t write this music unless it has that outlet on stage. That helps write the music. This is what I do it for: the live thing. And until we feel like we can’t do it, or the buzz goes, we won’t stop." It’s that sense of do-or-die commitment that is reflected in the album title. “To us, ‘No Tourists’ is ultimately about escapism and the want and need to be derailed. Don’t be a tourist - there is always more danger and excitement to be found if you stray from the set path.”

BIO

Following the disbandment of the short-lived synth pop group Yazoo, former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke formed Erasure in 1985 with singer Andy Bell. Like Yaz and Depeche Mode, Erasure were a synth-based group, but they had stronger dance inclinations, as well as a sharper, more accessible sense of pop songcraft than either of Clarke's previous bands. Furthermore, Erasure had the flamboyantly eccentric Andy Bell -- one of the first openly gay performers in pop music -- as their focal point. Bell's keening, high voice and exaggerated sense of theatricality became the band's defining image. After making their debut with 1986's Wonderland, the duo's third album, 1988's The Innocents, proved to be their U.S. breakthrough, offering the Top 20 singles "Chains of Love" and "A Little Respect." They reached the Top 20 again in 1994 with the international hit "Always," then remained a regular Billboard 200 act with occasional singles landing on the club charts. While Erasure were successful in their native Britain from their inception, they had their first U.K. Top Ten album in 20 years with 2017's World Be Gone, their 17th studio LP. Before forming Erasure, Clarke was one of the founding members of the groundbreaking synth pop outfit Depeche Mode. He left after recording only one album with the group, choosing to form Yaz with Alison Moyet instead. After Yaz released two albums, Moyet left to pursue a solo career. Clarke participated in a short-lived alliance with vocalist Feargal Sharkey and producer Eric Radcliffe called the Assembly in 1984. Following a single with vocalist Paul Quinn, he decided to form Erasure. Clarke placed an advertisement for vocalists in a British music newspaper and received over 40 demo tapes -- he selected Bell as his partner. Released in 1986, Erasure's first album, Wonderland, just barely cracked the U.K. Top 75. The duo quickly followed it with "Sometimes," a preview from their forthcoming second album. "Sometimes" reached number two on the U.K. charts, beginning a string of successful singles that would run into the 2000s. The Circus was released in the spring of 1987 and peaked at number six on the U.K. charts. The Innocents, Erasure's third album, became their first number one album in Britain upon its release in 1988. The album featured the group's first American hit, "Chains of Love," which reached number 12 in the U.S.; its follow-up, "A Little Respect," peaked at number 14 in America. At the end of 1988, Erasure released the Crackers International EP, which reached number two in Britain. Erasure's fourth album, Wild!, appeared in 1989, and like its predecessor, reached number one in the U.K., as did its successor, 1991's Chorus. Erasure released the Abba-Esque EP, a tribute to the Swedish pop group ABBA, in 1992; it became their first number one single in the U.K. Later that year, Erasure released a compilation of their British singles, Pop! The First 20 Hits. Two years later, the duo released its fifth album, I Say I Say I Say, which featured the hit single "Always," their first American hit since 1988. Erasure's eponymous sixth album was released in the fall of 1995. It was followed in the spring of 1997 by Cowboy. Loveboat surfaced three years later. The all-covers Other People's Songs appeared in 2003, the same year as the oddly chosen compilation Hits! Before the release of 2005's "return-to-form" album Nightbird, Bell revealed he was HIV positive and had been since June of 1998. The 2006 album Union Street found the duo unplugging and re-recording old album tracks and B-sides with acoustic instruments. A tour with a full band supported the album and was documented on the 2007 live release On the Road to Nashville. Later in the year, another return-to-form album, Light at the End of the World, arrived. Tomorrow's World followed in 2011 with the duo handing production over to Frankmusik, whose previous work included Lady Gaga and the Pet Shop Boys. In 2013 they released Snow Globe, a holiday album featuring new songs from the duo along with some classic Christmas carols. A return to their club-oriented work of their earlier years, the dancefloor-ready The Violet Flame followed in 2014 with production from Richard X. Following celebrations of their 30th anniversary as a band in 2015, the duo released their 17th studio record in 2017. World Be Gone responded to the upheaval of the late 2010s with positive, proactive songs. Accompanied by a summer stadium tour with Robbie Williams, it returned Erasure to the U.K. Top Ten for the first time in 20 years, reaching number six. They followed it in early 2018 with World Beyond, a re-recording of World Be Gone arranged for Bell and the Belgian chamber ensemble Echo Collective. Recorded across two nights at London's Eventim Apollo as part of an extensive world tour, World Be Live arrived close behind in mid-2018. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

As the electronic music duo AlunaGeorge, vocalist Aluna Francis and producer George Reid have amalgamated electronic pop, 2-step garage, and left-field R&B. They met in 2009, when Reid remixed a track by Francis' group <a href="spotify:artist:4rIeWHo27Uz18mIh6syZfu">My Toys Like Me</a>, and debuted in 2011 on <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Sweet+Recordings%22">Sweet Recordings</a> with the "Analyser"/"We Are Chosen" single. By the end of the year, AlunaGeorge remixes for <a href="spotify:artist:61JSlTpMZZEvAd2sz4c6n0">Mirrors</a> ("Into the Heart") and <a href="spotify:artist:00FQb4jTyendYWaN8pK0wa">Lana Del Rey</a> ("Born to Die") were released. The relatively R&B-oriented "You Know You Like It" led a three-track <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Tri+Angle%22">Tri Angle</a> EP of the same title in June 2012. This was quickly followed by a remix of <a href="spotify:artist:1moxjboGR7GNWYIMWsRjgG">Florence + the Machine</a>'s "Spectrum," as well as a vocal version of <a href="spotify:artist:6YGu0Rv2120wkc4AXZSGgl">Rustie</a>'s Glass Swords track "After Light." "Your Drums, Your Love," their <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Island%22">Island</a> debut, was released in September 2012 and peaked at number 50 in the U.K. Early the following year, AlunaGeorge assisted with <a href="spotify:artist:6nS5roXSAGhTGr34W6n7Et">Disclosure</a>'s "White Noise," which reached number two in their country, and released their own "Attracting Flies" in advance of Body Music. A number 11 U.K. hit, the album featured the Top 20 pop single "Attracting Flies." <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Vagrant%22">Vagrant</a> supported the album in the U.S., where it went to number two on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Within a year, <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Island%22">Island</a> released Body Music Remixed with <a href="spotify:artist:6qgnBH6iDM91ipVXv28OMu">Kaytranada</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:3mZqziCJj4pq3P2VBpmK6p">Friendly Fires</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:61lyPtntblHJvA7FMMhi7E">Duke Dumont</a> among the contributors, though a later non-album <a href="spotify:artist:540vIaP2JwjQb9dm3aArA4">DJ Snake</a> remix of "You Know You Like It" became the duo's greatest stateside success, certified platinum by the RIAA. Between proper studio albums, Francis and Reid remained present with featured appearances on tracks by ZHU ("Automatic"), <a href="spotify:artist:1HxJeLhIuegM3KgvPn8sTa">Jack Ü</a> ("To Ü"), <a href="spotify:artist:6qgnBH6iDM91ipVXv28OMu">Kaytranada</a> ("Together"), and <a href="spotify:artist:6nxWCVXbOlEVRexSbLsTer">Flume</a> ("Innocence"). "I'm in Control," featuring <a href="spotify:artist:62DmErcU7dqZbJaDqwsqzR">Popcaan</a>, was released in early 2016 as the first of several singles that preceded AlunaGeorge's guest-loaded second studio album, I Remember, issued that September. In 2017, the pair returned with the singles "Last Kiss" and "Turn Up the Love." September 2018 saw the release of the tender ballad "Superior Emotions" ahead of the arrival of the duo's Champagne Eyes EP, which arrived later that fall. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

A consistently innovative beatmaker and producer, Jamie xx has helped shape the sound of the 21st century with his Mercury Music Prize-winning group <a href="spotify:artist:3iOvXCl6edW5Um0fXEBRXy">the xx</a> and on his own. The subtle blend of indie, R&B, and dance he crafted with <a href="spotify:artist:3iOvXCl6edW5Um0fXEBRXy">the xx</a> made him a sought-after remixer for artists such as <a href="spotify:artist:4dpARuHxo51G3z768sgnrY">Adele</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:1moxjboGR7GNWYIMWsRjgG">Florence + the Machine</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:0kEfub5RzlZOB2zGomqVSU">Gil Scott-Heron</a>, as on 2011's boundary-breaking We're New Here. As a solo artist, Jamie xx tempered the restraint of his other work with his reverence for dance music's power to move bodies and hearts. On singles like 2014's "Under One Roof Raving" and 2015's full-length In Colour, his artful blend of the kinetic and the atmospheric was inventive and evocative. With 2020's hard-edged "Idontknow" and 2022's festival-ready "Let's Do It Again" paving the way for 2024's In Waves, Jamie xx balanced crowd-pleasing grooves and thoughtful moods with an expert touch. Born Jamie Smith in Putney, he began his musical career playing the drums, but soon started using an Akai MPC that broadened his music and allowed him to play live as well as in the studio. In 2006, he teamed up with former school friends <a href="spotify:artist:4KDu9uqzqseVCpQXMa8Pvm">Oliver Sim</a>, Romy Madley Croft, and Baria Qureshi to form <a href="spotify:artist:3iOvXCl6edW5Um0fXEBRXy">the xx</a>. He was known as Jamie xx by 2009, the same year that the band released its acclaimed, Mercury Prize-winning self-titled debut on the XL subsidiary Young Turks. In addition to reworking the xx's tracks, his atmospheric version of <a href="spotify:artist:1moxjboGR7GNWYIMWsRjgG">Florence + the Machine</a>'s "You've Got the Love" sparked the interest of <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22XL%22">XL</a> boss Richard Russell, who asked him to remix rap pioneer <a href="spotify:artist:0kEfub5RzlZOB2zGomqVSU">Gil Scott-Heron</a>'s I'm New Here. The results were February 2011's We're New Here, which earned praise for the new dimensions it added to the original album. In 2011 Smith also released his debut solo single, "Far Nearer/Beat For," another acclaimed release that made it to number 128 on the U.K. singles chart. Also in 2011, Smith worked on <a href="spotify:artist:3TVXtAsR1Inumwj472S9r4">Drake</a>'s album Take Care, producing the <a href="spotify:artist:5pKCCKE2ajJHZ9KAiaK11H">Rihanna</a>-featuring title track, and also worked on remixes of <a href="spotify:artist:4Z8W4fKeB5YxbusRsdQVPb">Radiohead</a>'s "Bloom" and co-produced <a href="spotify:artist:3DiDSECUqqY1AuBP8qtaIa">Alicia Keys</a>' "When It's All Over" for her Girl on Fire album. In 2012, <a href="spotify:artist:3iOvXCl6edW5Um0fXEBRXy">the xx</a> returned with the even more polished and subdued Coexist, and Smith's remixes of "Reconsider," "Sunset," and "Missing" followed in its wake. Jamie xx returned to his solo career in 2014 with "Girl/Sleep Sound," a sleek, propulsive single released by <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Young+Turks%22">Young Turks</a>. That year, he also released the "All Under One Roof Raving" single, an homage to rave's heydays of the '90s. In March 2015, Smith issued two singles on the same day: "Loud Places," a smoldering track featuring his <a href="spotify:artist:3iOvXCl6edW5Um0fXEBRXy">xx</a> bandmate Madley Croft, and "Gosh," a hard-hitting instrumental. Both appeared on his debut album, In Colour, which also featured <a href="spotify:artist:4KDu9uqzqseVCpQXMa8Pvm">Sim</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:7Eu1txygG6nJttLHbZdQOh">Four Tet</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:50co4Is1HCEo8bhOyUWKpn">Young Thug</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:62DmErcU7dqZbJaDqwsqzR">Popcaan</a> and arrived in June 2015, reaching number three on the U.K. Albums Chart and hitting number 21 on the Billboard 200. As with his previous work, In Colour earned widespread acclaim that included a nomination for the Mercury Prize, a Brit Award nomination for British Album of the Year and a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album. Also in 2015, Jamie xx composed the score to Wayne McGregor's Tree of Codes, a ballet inspired by Jonathan Safran Foer's novel of the same name. In 2017, Jamie xx reunited with <a href="spotify:artist:4KDu9uqzqseVCpQXMa8Pvm">Sim</a> and Madley Croft for <a href="spotify:artist:3iOvXCl6edW5Um0fXEBRXy">the xx</a>'s third album I See You, a more fleshed-out sounding work that reached the top of the U.K. album charts. After scoring Roman Gavras’ 2018 film The World Is Yours, a 2019 live performance with <a href="spotify:artist:3C8RpaI3Go0yFF9whvKoED">the Avalanches</a>, and production work on a mixtape from <a href="spotify:artist:6UCQYrcJ6wab6gnQ89OJFh">Headie One</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:4oLeXFyACqeem2VImYeBFe">Fred Again</a>, Jamie xx resurfaced in April 2020 with the single "Idontknow," which boasted a faster-paced, more aggressive sound than the In Colour era. Soon after the single's release, he delivered his first Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1 in nine years, with tracks by <a href="spotify:artist:3TsEEdpuuCN1G0dPxV4uOA">Koreless</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:69lxxQvsfAIoQbB20bEPFC">Philip Glass</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:7C4sUpWGlTy7IANjruj02I">Peter Gabriel</a> in its two-hour set. "Let's Do It Again," a Bobby Barnes-sampling anthem, appeared in April 2022. More standalone tracks, including "Kill Dem" and "It's So Good," arrived before April 2024's "Baddy on the Floor," a collaboration with <a href="spotify:artist:0XfQBWgzisaS9ltDV9bXAS">Honey Dijon</a> that served as the first single from Jamie xx's second solo album. Festival dates and a residency at the London club Venue MOT that featured guests like <a href="spotify:artist:4nhvb6x9ZhPiYCzrHDNia9">Daphni</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:25uiPmTg16RbhZWAqwLBy5">Charli xcx</a> preceded the September release of In Waves. A more grounded, driving set than In Colour, the album included <a href="spotify:artist:6UE7nl9mha6s8z0wFQFIZ2">Robyn</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:1R84VlXnFFULOsWWV8IrCQ">Panda Bear</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:4KDu9uqzqseVCpQXMa8Pvm">Sim</a>, Madley Croft, and <a href="spotify:artist:3C8RpaI3Go0yFF9whvKoED">the Avalanches</a> among the producer's collaborators. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

A prime house-pop group and consistent club act, Faithless is at its core a duo of producers Rollo and Sister Bliss. Before the group officially came together in 1995, Rollo had produced a club hit ("Don't You Want Me" as Felix in 1992), plus an album for Kristine W. and remixes for the Pet Shop Boys, Björk, and Simply Red. Sister Bliss, a piano and violin prodigy from the age of five, converted to acid house in 1987, and quickly became one of the U.K.'s best house DJs, also recording several singles as herself. Though the two had begun producing together as early as 1993, Faithless became a stable quartet two years later with the addition of vocalists Jamie Catto (previously in the Big Truth Band) and Maxi Jazz (from the Soul Food Cafe Band). Faithless reached worldwide status quickly, with the 1994 singles "Salva Mea" (one of the biggest dance hits of the year), "Insomnia," and "Reverence." The debut Faithless album, also titled Reverence, appeared in late 1996 on Rollo's Cheeky Records, and was picked up for distribution by Arista the next year. Sunday 8pm followed in 1998, reaching number ten in Britain and lofting several of its club hits into the pop charts, including "Bring My Family Back," "Take the Long Way Home," and the Top Ten "God Is a DJ." (It was reissued the following year with a collection of remixes titled Saturday 3am.) A comedown mix album, Back to Mine, appeared in early 2001, just before Faithless released Outrospective, album number three, in June. Sparked by a pair of British hits, "We Come 1" and "One Step Too Far" (the latter featuring Dido on vocals), Outrospective charted across Europe and was certified platinum. In 2004, the band released the quieter than usual No Roots, with a new member (LSK) adding vocals. Two years later Faithless returned with 2006's To All New Arrivals. Featuring guest vocals from Robert Smith and Cat Power, the album failed to make the British Top Ten unlike their previous album. The Dance saw Faithless make a comeback in 2010, but even with a high-profile show at that year's Glastonbury Festival, the album became their last. In 2011, Maxi Jazz announced via their website that the band would come to an end. Faithless played their final live dates at London's Brixton Academy in April 2011. Within just a few years, however, the band made a comeback, playing several open-air venues during the summer of 2015 and releasing a remix album, Faithless 2.0, in September. The album included reworkings by a host of the biggest names in dance music, including Avicii, Tiësto, Rudimental, Armin Van Buuren, Eric Prydz, Above & Beyond, and Booka Shade. It also included several new originals from the band. ~ John Bush

BIO

Taking their inspiration and distinct imagery from the iconic 1977 docudrama Pumping Iron (featuring a very young and pumped Arnold Schwarzenegger), Bicep is the musical brainchild of Belfast-raised duo Andy Ferguson and Matt McBriar. DJ'ing and collecting vinyl since their late teens, the pair's love of disco, Chicago house, Detroit techno, Italo-disco, and everything analog in between inspired them to create a music-based blog titled Feel My Bicep. Acting as an outlet for the duo's eclectic and esoteric dance music tastes, as well as showcasing personal mixes and re-edits, they moved to London and began DJ'ing around the capital. As the website grew in stature and reputation (it featured guest mixes from Simian Mobile Disco, Ben Sun, and Ooft, among many others), they began to hone their own production skills, resulting in their first 12" release on Citizen Kane's Ghost Town label (a re-edit called "Strawberry," issued in 2009). It was their 2010 12", "Darwin," on the Rapture's co-owned label Throne of Blood that got them wider recognition. With the early support of Beats in Space host and DFA cohort Tim Sweeney, it topped the Boomkat chart and became XLR8R's most downloaded track of 2010. Bicep also released 313 on Traveller Records. This led to worldwide DJ gigs, another release on Throne of Blood -- the Silk EP -- and more remix opportunities in 2011, with the likes of Blood Orange, Tal M. Klein, Medlar, and Cosmic Kids all getting the Bicep treatment. During this same year, they started a monthly residency at Plastic People in East London. In 2012, the pair focused their affection for '90s-produced New Jersey house music on their vinyl-only 12" "$tripper" on Love Fever Records and provided well-received remixes for Blondes and Chamboche. During the latter part of 2012, Bicep collaborated with Ejeca and Omar Odyssey for the You/Don't EP on Will Saul and Fink's Aus Records, and formed their own label, which shared the name of their blog, Feel My Bicep. The label's first release, the duo's "Vision of Love," became a club hit, and was remixed by Detroit legend Carl Craig and released as a 12" by Kevin Saunderson's KMS label. The duo also collaborated with Simian Mobile Disco for 2013's "Sacrifice," released by SMD's Delicacies imprint. Bicep continued releasing club smashes, including "Satisfy," "D-Mil" (with Midland), and especially "Just," which was named 2015's track of the year by Mixmag and DJ Mag. They took their Feel My Bicep parties to clubs and festivals across the globe, and began performing live concerts in addition to DJ gigs, attracting huge crowds for both. In 2017, Bicep signed to Ninja Tune and geared up for the release of their long-awaited debut full-length. Simply titled Bicep, it was preceded by the singles "Glue" and "Aura," and arrived in September. ~ Aneet Nijjar

Few artists have had a more lasting impact on the shape of electronic music than Richard D. James. If the scene often feels shrouded in mystery, we have him to thank: Born in Ireland in 1971, the Cornwall, UK-based producer best known as Aphex Twin has gone by scads of aliases (Polygon Window, GAK, Power-Pill) and fostered wild speculation—that he lives in a bank vault, or drives a tank. His trickster persona has led to stunts like DJing with sandpaper and spectacles like his terrifying “Come to Daddy” video. But it’s James’ playful spirit and dazzlingly complex programming that have endured the most, spread across the ethereal fantasias of 1992’s <I>Selected Ambient Works 85-92</I>, the mercurial drill ’n’ bass cadences of 1995’s <I>...I Care Because You Do</I>, and 1996’s <I>Richard D. James Album</I>. Beyond the confines of IDM—that’s “intelligent dance music”—a subgenre that sprouted up around James’ mischievous rave mutations, his influence can be heard in James Blake’s crinkled sound design and Skrillex’s kinetic bass whirlwinds. Following 2001’s restlessly experimental <I>Drukqs</I>, home to the lovely piano sketch “Avril 14th,” which Kanye repurposed for 2010’s “Blame Game,” Aphex Twin went dark for more than a decade. <I>Syro</I>, his 2014 comeback, demonstrated a deeper, woozier sound, full of strange detunings and odd, shuddering grooves that have continued to distinguish his work across subsequent releases.

As comfortable on the big stages as they are in sweat soaked basements, the boys cross genres and styles with ease. Andy Cato and Tom Findlay met in London in the mid 90s. Groove Armada started as a series of nights across London. It was to promote these nights that they started releasing 12s for East London pioneer 'Tummy Touch'. An album made in a week, 'Northern Star', soon followed (which contained downbeat anthem 'At the River'), and from that came major label recognition. 'Vertigo' their first album on Jive sold over a million copies and four albums followed on SONY and BMG garnering Grammy and Brit Nominations and sold out gigs from Sydney to Moscow. A pioneering combination of performance and electronics, the GA live show evolved into one of the very best in dance music. Formed while at university in Leeds, the U.K. drum'n'bass act Sigma soon relocated to London and initially comprised Cameron Edwards, Joe Lenzie, and Ben Mauerhoff. Following a spate of well-received singles from 2006 onward on labels such as Mampi Swift's Charge and DJ Zinc's Bingo Beats, Mauerhoff decided to leave Sigma, eventually establishing himself as a Shanghai-based sound designer for the video industry. Edwards and Lenzie went on to form their own Life Recordings label in 2009 as an outlet for further studio work, and its inaugural release was a V.I.P. remix of their early Bingo Beats single "El Presidente." Before the end of the year the pair had won a Best Breakthrough DJs gong at the Drum'n'Bass Arena Awards. Remix work for other artists ensued, and summer 2010 saw them rework grime star Skepta's U.K. Top 20 hit "Rescue Me." In the same year, the duo realized a dream by issuing the two volumes of their Stand Tall EP on Adam F and Fresh's influential drum'n'bass label, Breakbeat Kaos. Their late 2011 Night and Day EPs on Life paved the way for a successful year of international touring in 2012, which included dates supporting fellow former Leeds student Christopher Mercer, aka Rusko. A 2013 remix of DJ Fresh, Jay Fay, and Ms. Dynamite's "Dibby Dibby Sound" helped to maintain their profile before Sigma scored their first U.K. hit single in the last days of the year with "Rudeboy," a collaboration with the South London-based grime MC Doctor. In April of the following year the duo enjoyed a U.K. number one with "Nobody to Love," a track that took inspiration from Kanye West's Yeezus album-closer, "Bound 2." The single that followed, "Changing," featured Paloma Faith and became their second platinum chart topper. In 2015, "Higher" (featuring Labrinth), "Glitterball" (featuring Ella Henderson), and "Coming Home" (featuring Rita Ora) all did similarly well, leading up to the release of their debut album Life, via their home-grown label of the same name. In late 2017, the group issued the single "Forever," which featured Quavo and Sebastian Kole. ~ James Wilkinson

BIO

The Shapeshifters are a highly successful West London house duo who topped the U.K. singles chart in 2004 with their debut release, "Lola's Theme." The duo produced additional hits such as "Back to Basics" (2005), "Incredible" (2006), and "Sensitivity" (2006), and they also released a series of albums, including DJ mixes such as Shapeshifters Present House Grooves (2004) as well as studio efforts such as Sound Advice (2006). Moreover, the Shapeshifters founded their own independent record label, Nocturnal Groove, yet have partnered with major dance label such as Positiva and Defected and have had their productions licensed internationally. Their remix work includes such high-profile artists as George Michael ("Flawless [Go to the City]," 2004) and Christina Aguilera ("Ain't No Other Man," 2006). The Shapeshifters also made a name for themselves as a DJ tandem, particularly in Ibiza, and also performed on occasion as a live band. The duo is officially billed as Shape:UK in the United States because of a trademark dispute with the Los Angeles-based alternative rap group Shape Shifters. The Shapeshifters are comprised of Max Reich (born in Sweden) and Simon Marlin (born in England), who originally met in 1996 in Gothenburg, Sweden. At that time, Reich was establishing himself as an up-and-coming techno producer while Marlin was working as an A&R representative for Downboy Recordings. Marlin would later serve as Reich's manager. With a few obscure releases already to his name, Reich made his full-length album debut in 1996 on Millennium Records with Moonstomp; subsequent full-lengths Swedish Workout (1997) and Few Hours Left (1998) were also released on Millennium, along with several accompanying 12" releases. Meanwhile, Reich collaborated with Samuel Malm to produce additional material under a series of monikers, namely Repulsor (Glütt, 1996; Double Action, 1997), Barbed Wire (Draatphunk, 1997), Rebound (Outrage, 1997), and Fused (Selected Works, 1997; This Party Sucks!, 1998). In 1999 Marlin negotiated a major-label contract with Sony for Reich and Malm's Fused project, beginning with a re-release of the This Party Sucks! 12" single. Incorporating vocalist Petra Hallberg into their collaboration, Reich and Malm recorded a full-length album for release on Sony. Titled Audio (2001), the album spawned a trio of singles, "Saving Mary," "Twisted," and "Terror," the latter of which was licensed by Danny Tenaglia for his 2002 mix album Back to Basics, on which it was sequenced as the finale. Meanwhile, Reich began working solo under the moniker Glider, independently releasing Let's Groove on Glider Music in 2001 before signing to Multiply Records for Riding High in 2003. He also began collaborating with Marlin on what would become "Lola's Theme," named after the latter's wife. Realizing that the production had great potential, the duo founded its own label, Nocturnal Groove, and inaugurated it with the release of "Lola's Theme" under the newly coined Shapeshifters moniker. "Lola's Theme" was released promotionally in 2003 as an instrumental before making its official debut on Nocturnal Groove in 2004 and subsequently being licensed for major-label release by the EMI subsidiary Positiva. Graced with a catchy horn riff sampled from Johnnie Taylor's 1982 hit "What About My Love," "Lola's Theme" was one of the hottest tracks at the 2004 Miami Winter Music Conference and subsequently went straight to number one on the U.K. singles chart during the week of its major-label release. A pair of double-disc DJ mix albums were released in the wake of the Shapeshifters' chart-topping success (Shapeshifters Present House Grooves, 2004; Shapeshifters Present House Grooves, Vol. 2, 2005) and the duo was nominated for a 2004 Brit Award. Meanwhile, Reich collaborated with Carl Ryden as Poker Pets for a 2004 release on Nocturnal Groove, "Lovin' You"; like "Lola's Theme," the track was licensed for major-label release by Positiva. In 2005 "Back to Basics" was released as the follow-up Shapeshifters single to "Lola's Theme" and became a Top Ten hit in England. A year later came the full-length Shapeshifters debut album, Sound Advice (2006), featuring vocalist Jenna Gibbons, along with three more hit singles, "Incredible" (number 12), "Sensitivity" (number 40), and "If in Doubt Go Out." The album was released in Europe by EMI Records and in the United States by Ultra Records. In 2007 a pair of new Shapeshifters productions, "Pusher" and "New Day," were released as singles on Positiva and became moderate hits, charting respectively at number 52 and 72. In 2008 the Shapeshifters signed to the Defected label and released the Treadstone/Chime single, the B-side of which is a remake of the 1990 Orbital classic. ~ Jason Birchmeier

His initials being E.G., English MC/vocalist Elliot Gleave performed under the name Example. Gleave got his feet wet as an MC while attending Royal Holloway, where he met Joseph Gardner (aka Rusher) and recorded a concept album in the audio booth of the university's film department. "A Pointless Song," one of the tracks recorded there, became Example's first release, a 2004 single on his All the Chats label. A handful of successive 12" singles, as well as an answer song to Lily Allen's "Smile" -- "Vile," issued on the Beats, the label run by the Streets' Mike Skinner -- gained the attention of several BBC DJs. What We Made, Example's debut album, followed on the Beats in 2007 but failed to make much of a commercial impact. A deal with Ministry of Sound's Data label and an overt focus on reaching the clubs, however, fostered chart success. Released in 2009, "Watch the Sun Come Up," produced by the Fearless, peaked in the Top 20 of the U.K. pop chart, while both "Won't Go Quietly" (also produced by the Fearless) and "Kickstarts" (Sub Focus) reached the Top Ten and topped the dance chart. The full-length Won't Go Quietly was released in June 2010 and featured the pre-album hits, as well as productions from MJ Cole, Calvin Harris, Chase & Status, and Björn Yttling (of Peter Bjorn and John). Featuring the hits "Stay Awake" and "Changed the Way You Kissed Me," his 2011 effort, Playing in the Shadows, debuted at number one on the U.K. album charts. Calvin Harris, Benga, and Dada Life were some of the producers whose work was found on his 2012 effort, The Evolution of Man. In 2013 the career-spanning #hits ended the artist's relationship with Ministry of Sound, as he had signed with the Epic Records label. He then started work on his fifth album with producers Critikal, Stuart Price, and Fraser T. Smith in L.A. Titled Live Life Living, the record was released in 2014. Example then took a break from recording and touring for the next three years to focus on family life. He returned in 2018 with his sixth LP, Bangers & Ballads. ~ Andy Kellman

Chicane is the group name for British trance musician and remixer Nick Bracegirdle, who first attracted attention under the name Disco Citizens with the Top 40 U.K. hit "Right Here Right Now" in 1995. Changing to Chicane, he reached the British Top 20 in late 1996 with "Offshore." He then enlisted Clannad's Maire Brennan for a remake of the Clannad hit "The Theme from Harry's Game" under the title "Saltwater," which reached the U.K. Top Ten and became an international hit. The first Chicane album, Far from the Maddening Crowds, was released in 1997. As a remixer, Bracegirdle transformed Bryan Adams' "Cloud #9" for another major hit in most Western countries. Employing Adams as an uncredited vocalist, he then topped the British charts with "Don't Give Up." It was featured on the second Chicane album, Behind the Sun, released in Europe in the spring of 2000. This disc reached the Top Ten in Britain and charted across Europe and in the Far East. Behind the Sun was released in the U.S. in August 2000 and Visions of Ibiza appeared the next summer. In the years that followed Bracegirdle suffered a series of setbacks, resulting in him releasing his 2007 album, Somersault, independently. He released his next five albums through his D.I.Y. label Modena, culminating with 2016's Twenty. ~ William Ruhlmann

Born in 1977, Dan Stein, aka DJ Fresh, is one of the most influential figures on the U.K. drum'n'bass scene. Initially finding success as part of the group Bad Company (often referred to as Bad Company UK or BC to avoid confusion with the '70s rock band of the same name), he branched off and found more mainstream success as a solo artist, gradually producing work in other genres such as dubstep and electro-house. He's also co-founded several well-known labels, most notably Breakbeat Kaos. Influenced by tapes brought back from illegal raves by older friends, he bought his first turntables in his teens, and while at university, started playing late-night sets on local pirate radio stations. He began releasing solo tracks under the names Fresh and Absolute Zero. In 1999, as part of the drum'n'bass collective Bad Company, he founded the record label BC Recordings and the scene's most popular website, Dogs on Acid. After leaving to pursue a solo career, he remixed tracks for Pet Shop Boys, DJ Shadow, and Apollo 440, and founded the Breakbeat Punk label, which later merged with Adam F's Kaos Recordings to become Breakbeat Kaos. Following the release of several singles for highly regarded drum'n'bass labels like Valve and Ram Records, as well as mix CDs for Ministry of Sound and Human Imprint, he released his debut album, Escape from Planet Monday, in 2006. He continued a steady release schedule of singles, but 2009's "Heavyweight" on Digital Soundboy was a turning point toward a wobbly bass sound similar to what was happening in the developing dubstep genre at the time. The track also appeared on his sophomore full-length, Kryptonite, which included drum'n'bass as well as dubstep tracks. The album produced his first major hit single, "Gold Dust" (featuring dancehall reggae singer Ce'cile), which reached number 24. Building on the commercial success that Kryptonite brought, DJ Fresh released the single "Louder" (featuring Sian Evans) in 2011. The track -- used in a Lucozade advertising campaign -- became the first dubstep single to reach the top of the U.K. singles chart. He made chart history again in 2012 with "Hot Right Now" (featuring Rita Ora), the first drum'n'bass single to reach number one. Subsequent hits included "The Power" (with MC Dizzee Rascal) and a remake of "Gold Dust" featuring Ms. Dynamite. All of these appeared on Fresh's third studio album, Nextlevelism, which hit number 14 on the U.K. album chart. Since the album's release, Fresh has released several other hits in anticipation of his fourth album, many of which have diverted from drum'n'bass and dubstep into styles such as trap and moombahton. "Earthquake" (featuring vocalist Dominique Young Unique and co-produced by Diplo) from 2013 and the following year's "Dibby Dibby Sound" (with Ms. Dynamite and Jay Fay) both hit the Top Five and were certified silver. Also in 2014, "Make U Bounce" (Fresh's reworking of an older track by TC, featuring Little Nikki) hit number ten, and a new version of his Ellie Goulding collaboration "Flashlight" hit the Top 50. In 2015, Fresh recorded "Gravity" with British soul singer Ella Eyre. The song reached the number four spot, was certified gold, and later appeared on Eyre's successful debut album, Feline. Fresh then collaborated with Adam F on a soul-influenced single titled "Believer." The How Love Begins EP was released in 2016; the title track was a collaboration with Dizzee Rascal, High Contrast, and Clare Maguire. "Bang Bang" appeared at the end of the year; another collaboration with Diplo, the song featured R. City, Selah Sue, and Craig David. ~ Jon O'Brien & Paul Simpson

In addition to their original compositions, the duo have also remixed chart-topping hits from world-class talent ranging from Sasha and Bob Moses, to ODESZA and Shouse, earning ardent support from industry authorities such as Boiler Room and BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix.

Leeds-based electronic duo Harvey Blumler and Gosha Smith (aka Prospa) chart a course through classic house and rave-era dance music. Growing up, both Blumler and Smith were more interested in rock music, with the former taking up drums and the latter learning guitar. In their teenage years, they gained an interest in electronic music production: Blumler started out by crafting dubstep inspired beats, whilst Smith was intent on making jazz-infused hip hop. They crossed paths in the early 2010s, joining forces as producers in 2013, originally pursuing deep house before moving into classic rave sounds. They released their breakthrough single "Prayer" in 2018, helping to revive label Stress Records. Their debut EP, 2019's self-released Control the Party arrived the following year.

BIO

Jon Hopkins is a classically trained composer and electronic musician from England whose solo and collaborative works, including deeply cerebral ambient techno recordings and immersive film scores, have received widespread acclaim as well as Grammy and Mercury Prize nominations. Initially gaining exposure through his work with <a href="spotify:artist:7MSUfLeTdDEoZiJPDSBXgi">Brian Eno</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:4gzpq5DPGxSnKTe4SA8HAU">Coldplay</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:5SP6T04F8Ic9oftMVfdKkp">King Creosote</a> beginning in the mid-2000s, Hopkins gradually found his voice as a solo artist, blending intricately crafted beats with serene, meditative textures. Immunity (2013) and Singularity (2018), two intense, ambitious sets of spiritually minded techno and ambient tracks, were among the decade's most lauded electronic albums. He then embraced meditative music with 2021's Music for Psychedelic Therapy and 2024's Ritual. Growing up in Wimbledon, Hopkins was a gifted child pianist who studied piano at the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music for five years. Along with his fascination with the works of <a href="spotify:artist:17hR0sYHpx7VYTMRfFUOmY">Ravel</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:7ie36YytMoKtPiL7tUvmoE">Stravinsky</a>, he also fell in love with electronic music at a young age and was a fan of synth pop acts like <a href="spotify:artist:762310PdDnwsDxAQxzQkfX">Depeche Mode</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:2ycnb8Er79LoH2AsR5ldjh">Pet Shop Boys</a>. During his teens, he started making acid house and drum'n'bass, using the money he won from piano competitions to buy himself synths and recording gear. After leaving school, Hopkins joined <a href="spotify:artist:6Xb4ezwoAQC4516kI89nWz">Imogen Heap</a>'s band as a keyboardist and toured with her throughout 1998. He signed to <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Just+Music%22">Just Music</a> in 2001, and recorded his debut album, Opalescent, while working part-time as a studio session musician in Wembley. His next album, 2004's Contact Note, had a more cinematic feel and featured vocals by <a href="spotify:artist:6Xb4ezwoAQC4516kI89nWz">Heap</a> as well as <a href="spotify:artist:7sTquS5f48NuSUHjSpgsPD">Lisa Lindley-Jones</a>. It gained the respect of <a href="spotify:artist:7MSUfLeTdDEoZiJPDSBXgi">Brian Eno</a>, who recruited Hopkins to play keys on his 2005 album Another Day on Earth, beginning a long-running collaboration between the two. Around this time, Hopkins also began another extended creative relationship with <a href="spotify:artist:5SP6T04F8Ic9oftMVfdKkp">King Creosote</a>, producing the Scottish singer/songwriter's 2007 album Bombshells. That year, <a href="spotify:artist:7MSUfLeTdDEoZiJPDSBXgi">Eno</a> invited Hopkins to work on <a href="spotify:artist:4gzpq5DPGxSnKTe4SA8HAU">Coldplay</a>'s 2008 album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, on which he played various keyboards and co-produced several tracks with <a href="spotify:artist:7MSUfLeTdDEoZiJPDSBXgi">Eno</a>. Along with serving as the opening act on <a href="spotify:artist:4gzpq5DPGxSnKTe4SA8HAU">Coldplay</a>'s 2008 world tour, he composed music for Entity, a piece by choreographer Wayne McGregor that was performed worldwide. During this time, Hopkins also worked on his own music, and released his third solo album, Insides, in May 2009. Combining strings, piano, and dubstep-tinged bass along with synths and beats, the album reached number 15 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Hopkins continued to collaborate, working with Tuung on their 2009 EP Seven Gulps of Air and joining forces with <a href="spotify:artist:7MSUfLeTdDEoZiJPDSBXgi">Eno</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:1PXHzxRDiLnjqNrRn2Xbsa">Underworld</a>'s <a href="spotify:artist:6CvoJSlt6a9fTs0XUJNMjj">Karl Hyde</a>, longtime friend <a href="spotify:artist:6g4q7DPLaVqWGnfMpAb2Yd">Leo Abrahams</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:2S0D6Vlt9T6z5MNm1UBJgf">the Necks</a> as Pure Scenius, an improv group that played a series of concerts. Hopkins also began composing for film, working with <a href="spotify:artist:7MSUfLeTdDEoZiJPDSBXgi">Eno</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:6g4q7DPLaVqWGnfMpAb2Yd">Abrahams</a> on the score to Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones. On his own, he wrote the music for the 2010 short film Rob and Valentyna and Gareth Edwards' sci-fi film Monsters, which was also released in 2010 and earned an Ivor Novello Award nomination for Best Original Score. That year, Hopkins reunited with <a href="spotify:artist:6g4q7DPLaVqWGnfMpAb2Yd">Abrahams</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:7MSUfLeTdDEoZiJPDSBXgi">Eno</a> on the improvisation-based album Small Craft on a Milk Sea. In 2011, he and <a href="spotify:artist:5SP6T04F8Ic9oftMVfdKkp">King Creosote</a> released the largely acoustic Diamond Mine; the culmination of seven years' worth of work, it was nominated for a Mercury Prize. The pair followed it with two EPs, 2011's Honest Words and 2012's The Jubilee. Diamond Mine influenced Hopkins' 2013 album, Immunity, an organic-sounding set of energetic dance music and more reflective moments that also earned a Mercury Prize nomination. After writing the score for the 2013 film How I Live Now, he returned with 2014's Asleep Versions, an EP of tranquil and vocal-heavy versions of tracks from Immunity featuring vocals from <a href="spotify:artist:5SP6T04F8Ic9oftMVfdKkp">King Creosote</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:6JX35IQ1Yw84Yjzq2Y5p5i">Braids</a>' Raphaelle Standell-Preston. In 2015, Hopkins contributed a volume to the LateNightTales mix series, and reissued Opalescent in 2016 to celebrate its 15-year anniversary. Early in 2018, the single "Emerald Rush" heralded the release of his fifth album, Singularity, that May. The full-length was Hopkins' biggest critical and commercial success, reaching number nine on the U.K. album chart and receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album. Hopkins collaborated with <a href="spotify:artist:5eitAUlYmlha3LLWg7aBn5">Kelly Lee Owens</a> on the single "Luminous Spaces," released in late 2019. The following year, he issued the ambient piece "Scene Suspended," as well as "Singing Bowl (Ascension)," the first in a series of compositions titled Meditations. He continued in this direction with his 2021 full-length Music for Psychedelic Therapy. Hopkins co-produced the euphoric title track to <a href="spotify:artist:0pkLgeB9j465x1QB2kRoy4">HAAi</a>'s 2022 album Baby, We're Ascending. A single of meditation versions of pieces from Music for Psychedelic Therapy appeared in 2023. Ritual, a continuously flowing work featuring hypnotic drumming and cavernous subs, was released in 2024, featuring collaborators such as <a href="spotify:artist:6kic5bCjlohhDn9KzXbOta">Clark</a>, Vylana, and 7RAYS. ~ Heather Phares & Paul Simpson, Rovi

Refusing to be pigeonholed into any one dance genre, the UK’s Solardo has long proven their ability as musical chameleons, resulting in a growing discography that's as impressively varied as it is seamless. From huge techno chart-topper “Riser” to outdoor anthem "I Can't Wait" alongside Tiësto and Poppy Baskcomb or 2019's revision of Marshall Jefferson's timeless "Move Your Body," it's clear that Solardo can simply do no wrong. Solardo’s latest release, “Big Talk”, sees the duo take it to the studio with Idris Elba for the first time, dimming the lights for a sizzling production that’s been turning the heads of many already. From playing for epic crowds at festivals like Glastonbury, Tomorrowland, EDC Las Vegas, Ultra Music Festival Miami, Creamfields, and Parklife to some of the world’s biggest superclubs as well as some of the world’s most respected clubs, Solardo adapt to whichever crowd is put in front of them. Next to their history of releasing on the biggest labels in the game, from Ultra to Hot Creations to Relief to Toolroom, they focus their A&R efforts on their three labels: Sola Music (representing the kind of dancefloor-focused tracks they play in their sets), Sola Nauts (for their crossover output) and Sola Eclipse (for darker, more late-night minimal sounds).

BIO

Whether in solitude or supported by a cast of musicians, Flying Lotus distills a uniquely crisp, spasmodic, and heady sound with elements of hip-hop, experimental electronic music, and avant-garde jazz. Regarded upon his 2006 arrival as a promising beatmaker looming in the shadows of <a href="spotify:artist:0IVcLMMbm05VIjnzPkGCyp">J Dilla</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:5LhTec3c7dcqBvpLRWbMcf">Madlib</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:1tVRa7YiCwE6hTGsqqb4Te">Dabrye</a>, Steven Ellison -- the producer known as Flying Lotus -- nullified all comparisons only two years later with Los Angeles. On that album, his first of five for the <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Warp%22">Warp</a> label, Ellison advanced a progressive collision of styles that typified the L.A. beat scene of which he was part. While the abovementioned producers fueled Ellison, he had also been excited as a youngster by the '90s West Coast rap classics that combined programming and live instrumentation. His sound continued to develop as he put his own twist on the approach, recording with a crop of jazz artists including the indispensable likes of bassist <a href="spotify:artist:4frXpPxQQZwbCu3eTGnZEw">Thundercat</a> and strings master <a href="spotify:artist:6SlLXvZvYEGnurxBUpUdri">Miguel Atwood-Ferguson</a>. This process began with the turbulent 2010 set Cosmogramma and peaked in terms of acclaim in 2014 with You're Dead!, which crashed the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 and spawned the <a href="spotify:artist:2YZyLoL8N0Wb9xBt1NhZWg">Kendrick Lamar</a> collaboration "Never Catch Me," a Grammy nominee for Best Dance Recording. Ellison devoted a few years to various forms of film work and the operation of his revered <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Brainfeeder%22">Brainfeeder</a> label, and returned in 2019 with Flamagra, his second consecutive album to top Billboard's Dance/Electronic chart. After he was Grammy-nominated for Producer of the Year, he provided the score for the 2021 anime series Yasuke. The <a href="spotify:artist:2Gu6Q05ExIGwHTF43kqLBI">David Lynch</a>-inspired "Garmonbozia," Ellison's first solo single in several years, arrived in 2024. Steven Ellison was born in Los Angeles and raised in the city's Winnetka neighborhood. He is the grandson of <a href="spotify:artist:50VpZk1HIigPDlwa0Mbgir">Marilyn McLeod</a>, a songwriter and producer known for co-writing hits such as <a href="spotify:artist:3MdG05syQeRYPPcClLaUGl">Diana Ross</a>' "Love Hangover" and <a href="spotify:artist:1VDurPMbOKrNU8mcMP4X1P">Jermaine Jackson</a>'s "Let Me Tickle Your Fancy." Additionally, Ellison is the grand-nephew of visionary jazz artists <a href="spotify:artist:0oKYiTD5CdNbrofRvM1dIr">Alice Coltrane</a> (<a href="spotify:artist:50VpZk1HIigPDlwa0Mbgir">McLeod</a>'s sister) and <a href="spotify:artist:2hGh5VOeeqimQFxqXvfCUf">John Coltrane</a>. His cousins include <a href="spotify:artist:7acdJJMSkYQly2X92K3u7u">Ravi</a> and Oran Coltrane, the latter of whom introduced him to electronic music production and gave him his first piece of gear, a Roland MC-505 groovebox. Drawn first to filmmaking -- he made stop-motion clips in his youth, using action figures and a camcorder -- Ellison obtained a degree from Los Angeles Film School and continued at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. After a short period in the Bay Area, he returned to L.A. and in 2004 started working as an intern for <a href="spotify:artist:3KjYnDT3cEQ8ngiCLTCIl9">Peanut Butter Wolf</a>'s <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Stones+Throw%22">Stones Throw</a> label, which enabled him to cross paths with inspirations such as <a href="spotify:artist:0IVcLMMbm05VIjnzPkGCyp">J Dilla</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:5LhTec3c7dcqBvpLRWbMcf">Madlib</a>. All the while, Ellison had continued to work on music, particularly taken with the Akai MPC sampler. In response to an open call from Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming block, Ellison submitted tracks, and soon had them licensed for use between segments and commercial breaks. Ellison debuted officially as Flying Lotus in 2006, the year he connected with <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Plug+Research%22">Plug Research</a>, a crucial outlet of Los Angeles' emerging beat scene. His "Two Bottom Blues" appeared beside tracks by established contemporaries such as <a href="spotify:artist:1YRGQOk4Mk9EpM6nTJhXtK">Daedelus</a>, Sa-Ra, and <a href="spotify:artist:2RdnkH5txHb9c4vGwq0I31">Georgia Anne Muldrow</a> on Carlos Niño Presents the Sound of L.A. A couple months later, he provided a remix for <a href="spotify:artist:1r3efMZ0kcejkPKP8oQZzv">Mia Doi Todd</a>'s La Ninja: Amor and Other Dreams. That October, <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Plug+Research%22">Plug Research</a> released 1983, Ellison's first album. Titled after his birth year, it was created in solitude with the exception of the cosmic "Unexpected Delight," featuring vocals from Laura Darlington -- a frequent collaborator for years to come. Signal-boosting support came most prominently from BBC DJ <a href="spotify:artist:4fH73bVIwM24QrBqjTrhAA">Gilles Peterson</a>. The next year, U.K. underground institution <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Warp+Records%22">Warp Records</a> signed Ellison and issued the Reset EP -- another October delivery -- on which Ellison's sound became more distinct. This time, <a href="spotify:artist:6SKEuFZYhaTytrhtJjgnO2">Andreya Triana</a> joined Ellison on the woozy opener "Tea Leaf Dancers," a signature early track. Meanwhile, Ellison had become a major catalyst in the activity emanating from Low End Theory, a weekly club night -- and public salon of sorts for aspiring beatmakers and other musicians -- held in L.A.'s Lincoln Heights neighborhood. Local groundswell and an increasing international profile combined to make Ellison's first <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Warp%22">Warp</a> LP a subcultural event. The definitively titled Los Angeles arrived in June 2008, entered Billboard's Dance/Electronic Albums chart at number 16, and months later was hailed by several music publications as one of the year's best albums. Ellison incorporated vocals from Laura Darlington, <a href="spotify:artist:6pdYN3jOHWteVALy9sKGEf">Gonjasufi</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:7gjbBSAraXRXxOTAkmWWQn">Dolly</a>, but he also received co-production input from fellow native Californians and L.A. transplants. Three of them -- <a href="spotify:artist:5dVua2HdrY1VlbPh6OM9KZ">Gaslamp Killer</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:56j1OkSq0AMCgZGKVNc8GP">Samiyam</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:4KKx8fVJ0y7EcpmYZ42jPc">MatthewDavid</a> -- soon helped build the catalog of Ellison's <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Brainfeeder%22">Brainfeeder</a> label, launched the same year and named after the opening track of Los Angeles. By August 2009, <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Warp%22">Warp</a> had also dispersed L.A. EP 1 X 3, L.A. EP 2 X 3, and L.A. EP 3 X 3, a trilogy of short-form releases containing previously unreleased cuts and remixes. One of the remixes came from eventual <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Brainfeeder%22">Brainfeeder</a> artist <a href="spotify:artist:68i1l0GWQ5dwzAy1UVNHNw">Martyn</a>, affirming Ellison's enthusiastic tracking of pre-commercial dubstep. Around that time, Ellison also remixed a <a href="spotify:artist:68i1l0GWQ5dwzAy1UVNHNw">Martyn</a> production and made his first in a handful of appearances on the <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Hyperdub%22">Hyperdub</a> label. One of many formative inspirations for Ellison was West Coast rap -- G-funk especially -- that integrated programming and live instrumentation. For the producer's next album, he took the concept to the hilt, albeit with a result that moved him closer to modern electric avant-garde jazz than to lowrider classics. Released in May 2010, Cosmogramma was a turning point for Ellison, made with instrumentalists such as bassist and vocalist <a href="spotify:artist:4frXpPxQQZwbCu3eTGnZEw">Thundercat</a>, violinist and arranger <a href="spotify:artist:6SlLXvZvYEGnurxBUpUdri">Miguel Atwood-Ferguson</a>, harpist Rebekah Raff, and Ellison's cousin, tenor saxophonist <a href="spotify:artist:7acdJJMSkYQly2X92K3u7u">Ravi Coltrane</a>. Darlington, Niki Randa, and <a href="spotify:artist:4Z8W4fKeB5YxbusRsdQVPb">Radiohead</a>'s <a href="spotify:artist:4CvTDPKA6W06DRfBnZKrau">Thom Yorke</a> also provided vocals on one track each. Just as significantly, Ellison incorporated sounds from medical equipment recorded in the hospital room of his mother, who died just before the album began to take shape. Even though the placement of those recordings isn't as obvious as, say, a <a href="spotify:artist:4frXpPxQQZwbCu3eTGnZEw">Thundercat</a> bassline, heavy-hearted sentiments were made evident throughout. Cosmogramma reached number three on the Dance/Electronic Albums chart and was the first Flying Lotus LP to hit the Billboard 200, registering at number 88. The supplemental Pattern+Grid World EP was out a few months later. Until the Quiet Comes, the dreamlike fourth Flying Lotus album, was out in September 2012. Spacier and pared down in relation to Cosmogramma, it still found room for the likes of <a href="spotify:artist:4frXpPxQQZwbCu3eTGnZEw">Thundercat</a>, other <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Brainfeeder%22">Brainfeeder</a> affiliates including keyboardists <a href="spotify:artist:0aDq59Z2MJTahQmYIX3kBY">Austin Peralta</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:1bCEhVC3192xS5WteIaXOs">Brandon Coleman</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:6SlLXvZvYEGnurxBUpUdri">Atwood-Ferguson</a>. Darlington, Randa, and <a href="spotify:artist:4CvTDPKA6W06DRfBnZKrau">Yorke</a> likewise added ghostly vocals, as did <a href="spotify:artist:7IfculRW2WXyzNQ8djX8WX">Erykah Badu</a>. It cracked the Top 40 of the Billboard 200, peaking at number 34, and narrowly missed the top of the Dance/Electronic chart. Ellison then bolted in the opposite direction and reached a new level of acclaim with his next work. You're Dead!, released in October 2014, used many of the players familiar to Flying Lotus sessions -- plus <a href="spotify:artist:2ZvrvbQNrHKwjT7qfGFFUW">Herbie Hancock</a>, rising <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Brainfeeder%22">Brainfeeder</a> addition <a href="spotify:artist:6HQYnRM4OzToCYPpVBInuU">Kamasi Washington</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:7hJcb9fa4alzcOq3EaNPoG">Snoop Dogg</a>, as well as Ellison under his rapping Captain Murphy guise -- and multiplied the intensity. The thrashing LP scraped the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 and topped Dance/Electronic Albums. "Never Catch Me," featuring <a href="spotify:artist:2YZyLoL8N0Wb9xBt1NhZWg">Kendrick Lamar</a>, was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Dance Recording. Ellison had co-produced "Wesley's Theory" for <a href="spotify:artist:2YZyLoL8N0Wb9xBt1NhZWg">Lamar</a>'s To Pimp a Butterfly, a contender for Album of the Year, making him a two-time nominee. <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Brainfeeder%22">Brainfeeder</a> inevitably branched into film production, beginning with the biological horror-comedy vignette Royal and the 2017 parent feature Kuso, both directed by (and featuring music from) Ellison. Additionally, Flying Lotus was the name credited with the music for the short Blade Runner Black Out 2022, among some other visual projects that reached the public in the mid- to late 2010s. Ellison ended the longest period between Flying Lotus albums in May 2019 with Flamagra. Put together over the intervening years, it threw <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Brainfeeder%22">Brainfeeder</a> signee <a href="spotify:artist:2GVBp7QyHckoOg7rYkLvrA">George Clinton</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:2auiVi8sUZo17dLy1HwrTU">Solange</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:3jK9MiCrA42lLAdMGUZpwa">Anderson .Paak</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:6C403AR4y6PjN0xNNGh42m">Shabazz Palaces</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:4lPl9gqgox3JDiaJ1yklKh">Tierra Whack</a>, among several other guests, into the mix. A central role was played by director <a href="spotify:artist:2Gu6Q05ExIGwHTF43kqLBI">David Lynch</a>, who spun a tale about an inferno threatening to engulf a neighborhood. Flamagra became the second Flying Lotus LP to top the Dance/Electronic Albums chart, and debuted on the Billboard 200 at number 45. He continued to work closely with <a href="spotify:artist:4frXpPxQQZwbCu3eTGnZEw">Thundercat</a> on the bassist's 2020 release It Is What It Is; it won a Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album, and the same year, Ellison was among the nominees for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical. Returning to film work, Ellison composed the soundtrack to the 2021 Netflix anime series Yasuke, based on a 16th century Black samurai. "The Room," a neo-soul single featuring singer Devin Tracy, appeared in 2022, the same year Ellison co-wrote, directed, and scored the "Ozzy's Dungeon" segment of the horror anthology film V/H/S/99. He and <a href="spotify:artist:3kf0gOpxWtkyeMNJVDQPtd">Smoke DZA</a> partnered for Flying Objects, an EP that featured appearances from <a href="spotify:artist:6DJEUXZm0e2rAohdoZ5Voo">Black Thought</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:5T0MSzX9RC5NA6gAI6irSn">Estelle</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:67gqUXxHedeUGDTxwBzdjS">Conway the Machine</a>, in 2023. Still inspired by <a href="spotify:artist:2Gu6Q05ExIGwHTF43kqLBI">David Lynch</a> -- Twin Peaks in particular -- Ellison returned in 2024 with the woozy single "Garmonbozia," on which he sang about being confined to "the red room." ~ Andy Kellman

Hailing from Nottingham, England, bedroom producer Philip George quit his two part-time jobs to pursue a career in music after releasing "Wish You Were Mine," which charted in the U.K. Top Ten at the end of 2014 and went on to reach number two in the first singles chart of 2015. George regularly uploaded his garage-influenced house music to streaming websites, but it was "Wish You Were Mine" -- which used a <a href="spotify:artist:7guDJrEfX3qb6FEbdPA5qi">Stevie Wonder</a> sample from "My Cherie Amour" -- that began to pick up traction among the online community. It was eventually released as a single by dance label <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%223+Beat%22">3 Beat</a> in the final week of 2014 and went straight into the U.K. Top Ten. By late 2015, George had scored his second Top Ten U.K. hit single with the <a href="spotify:artist:7h7ahzbTkbAFsshWJ7fOrc">Anton Powers</a> collaboration "Alone No More." ~ Scott Kerr

Electronic dance outfit Knife Party started as a side project featuring the two founding members of Perth, Australia's long-running drum'n'bass act <a href="spotify:artist:7MqnCTCAX6SsIYYdJCQj9B">Pendulum</a>. Emerging in the early 2010s, the pair made an early splash on a collaboration with <a href="spotify:artist:1h6Cn3P4NGzXbaXidqURXs">Swedish House Mafia</a>, the multi-platinum "Antidote." They went on to release a handful of EPs that charted across the globe, issuing their official debut full-length, Abandon Ship, in 2014. In late 2011, Gareth McGrillen and <a href="spotify:artist:2SNg8nqwOHF1eZgRnL9zes">Rob Swire</a> debuted their aggressive electro-house/dubstep guise with 100% No Modern Talking, released digitally through the <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Earstorm%22">Earstorm</a> label and provided as a free download on the duo's website. They also matched up with <a href="spotify:artist:1h6Cn3P4NGzXbaXidqURXs">Swedish House Mafia</a> for the <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Virgin%22">Virgin</a>-issued "Antidote," billed as <a href="spotify:artist:1h6Cn3P4NGzXbaXidqURXs">Swedish House Mafia</a> vs. Knife Party. The track was certified triple-platinum and charted in at least nine territories. In mid-2012 the duo released their second EP, Rage Valley, again digitally on <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Earstorm%22">Earstorm</a>, followed just a year later by Haunted House, which landed at number one on the Billboard Dance chart. With three EPs in the bag, the duo issued their first official full-length, Abandon Ship, in 2014. The set featured Simon Aldred ("EDM Trend Machine") and <a href="spotify:artist:7mWMzxN6IAIQ1tfFFtAiQv">Bryn Christopher</a> ("Superstar"), charting just outside the Top 50 of the Billboard 200. After the release of fourth EP, Trigger Warning, McGrillen and <a href="spotify:artist:2SNg8nqwOHF1eZgRnL9zes">Swire</a> switched focus to other areas, only releasing a pair of collaborations with <a href="spotify:artist:74NBPbyyftqJ4SpDZ4c1Ed">Tom Morello</a> (2016's "Battle Sirens") and <a href="spotify:artist:0lLY20XpZ9yDobkbHI7u1y">Pegboard Nerds</a> (2018's "Harpoon").
